Pollution Control Assistant (Rockland County Sewer District No.1)

The Rockland County Sewer District No. 1 is seeking a candidate to work in their Operations Department laboratory. The work is of a moderately complex nature. The position involves the preparation of chemical solutions and performance of a variety of physical, chemical and bacteriological tests on sanitary sewage. Does related work as required.

The work is performed under the general supervision of a Pollution Control Supervisor.

Typical work activities include collection and analysis of wastewater samples collected at different stages of treatment and at various plant and field locations for routine laboratory testing; daily calibration, cleaning, and sterilizing of laboratory instruments, glassware, reagents, and equipment; preparing computerized monthly reports for state agencies; computes data of industrial samples and prepares reports; performs special chemical procedures and computerized instrument analysis; performs tests to maintain laboratory certification from the New York State Department of Health and EPA; performs analytical procedures and maintain records in accordance with the standards set by the state; maintains laboratory equipment and instruments and maintains inventory for laboratory supplies; provides assistance to the Pollution Control Supervisor in complex tests and special laboratory projects; prepares laboratory reagents for variety of tests for chemical and bacteriological analysis of samples from the plant facility as well as from other industries and state agencies; The work is performed under the general supervision of a Pollution Control Supervisor, with some latitude for independent performance. May perform supervisory duties in the absence or unavailability of the Pollutions Control Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree or higher in Biology, Chemistry, or a related laboratory science with a minimum of sixteen (16) credit hours in Chemistry, and one (1) year of work experience in a laboratory which involved analytical experience on a regular, on-going basis.

NOTE: Two (2) additional years of the above-mentioned experience and an Associate's degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related laboratory science may be substituted for the Bachelor's degree.

Other Requirements and Information:

• Residency in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut is a requirement for this position.
• This is a competitive position in Civil Service and reachability on an eligible list following a civil service examination would be a requirement for permanent appointment. -OR- Civil service examination requirements have been waived for this position. Candidates must only meet the minimum qualifications for consideration.
• Possession of a valid driver's license. Pre-employment medical examination and medical clearance for the use of respiratory equipment.
