Duties: Performs skilled manual work in the installation, modification, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of piping systems and associated appurtenances for steam, condensate, hot water associated with heating systems, process water, fuel oil, gas, air, and process chemicals.

Minimum Requirements: Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and completion of an approved apprentice training program in Pipefitting, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. SUBSTITUTION: Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Examination: The examination will consist of a written test weighted 40% and a performance test weighted 60%. The minimum passing score on each test will be 70% unless determined otherwise by the Director of Human Resources. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test to be eligible to compete in each subsequent test and to have their names placed on the eligible list.

The written test will assess candidates' knowledge, skill and ability in areas such as the principles, practices, and procedures of the pipefitter trade such as cutting, bending, welding, brazing, soldering, and fitting; use of various piping material and tools; math as applied in the trade; pressure piping, process piping systems and layouts; mechanical systems and components; reading and interpreting sketches, blueprints, specifications and operating manuals; pneumatic systems and controls and wastewater treatment process systems and components; safety practices and procedures; and following written instructions.

The performance test will assess candidates' skills in performing various pipefitting tasks.

WRITTEN TEST: The written test will be administered on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, 3857 West 111th Street, Chicago, IL.

Candidates should report at 10:00 a.m. with the approved (printed) admission letter and driver's license or other form of photo identification. Calculators will be provided. The use of books, study guides, cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, laptops or other aids during the test is prohibited.

PEFORMANCE TEST: The performance test is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, September 27, 2025 and any other dates that may be necessary to accommodate the number of candidates who pass the written. Only candidates who pass the written test will be informed by email regarding the date, time, and place of the performance test.

Appointments will be made from an eligible list with three categories: A (Exceptionally Well Qualified), B (Well Qualified) and C (Qualified). Candidates in the highest category will be given first consideration for appointment. The eligible list has a duration of three years. Appointment is subject to successfully passing a physical examination, a drug test, an evaluation of the candidate's ability to meet the specific physical demands of the job, and a criminal history background investigation.
