JOB TITLEPIPE FITTER 2/CLOCATIONVIRGINIA - PORTSMOUTH, VA 23704 US (Primary)JOB TYPEFull-TimeJOB CLASSIFICATIONHourlyEXEMPTION TYPENon-ExemptEDUCATIONHigh School Diploma/GEDJOB DESCRIPTIONJOB SUMMARY:A pipefitter who has 2 to 3 years of experience with laying out, assembling, installing, and maintaining pipe systems, pipe supports, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating , sprinkling, and industrial productionand processing systems as required for new construction or maintenance, applying knowledge of system operation and following blueprints with the use of periodic supervision and while always adhering to industry safety standards.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:1. Selects type and size of pipe, and related materials and equipment, such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders, according to specifications2. Inspects work site to determine presence of obstructions and to ascertain that holes cut for pipe will not cause structural weakness3. Plans installation or repair to avoid obstructions and to avoid interfering with activities of other workers4. Cuts, threads and bends pipe5. Assembles and installs variety of metal and nonmetal pipes, tubes, and fittings including: iron, steel, copper and plastic6. Connects pipe using threaded, caulked, soldered, brazed, fused, or cemented joints7. Secures pipes to structure with brackets, clamps, and hangers8. Installs and maintains hydraulic and pneumatic components of machines and equipments such as pumps, and cylinders9. Follows lockout/tagout procedures to shut down equipment according to OSHA requirements and company safety rules10. Sets up and operates various pipe cutting, bending, and threading machinery11. Bends, cuts, threads, shapes, fabricates, and installs pipe according to job specifications12. Cuts and bores holes in structures such as walls and fixtures before pipe installation; attaches pipes to walls and structures13. Installs various types of installation and pipe covering; removes and disposes of old coverings in line with the company hazardous waste procedures and EPA and OSHA requirements14. Makes hydraulic pressure test of piping installations. Checks and adjusts controls, gauges, and valves to achieve control of flow or pressure15. Inspects and maintains facility piping systems, heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems, water treatment and sewer systems, and burners and heaters. Reports deficiencies and corrects problems16. Posts and keeps up to date records of piping systems and controls. Posts records of safety checks and inspection dates of assigned equipment17. Performs other duties as assignedKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:1. Replace existing piping systems to original design and pressure requirements2. Install new piping systems using NavSea Drawings and Tech Manuals3. Effective planning and layout skills to minimize material waste4. Skilled use of power tools and machinery associated with pipe fitting5. Effective level of skill in blueprint reading and material requirements6. Good knowledge of joint design and fit up requirements IAW Mil-Std 22D7. Knowledge of requirements for pipe bending IAW Mil-Std 1627C8. Effective at setting up hydrostatic testing equipment to shipboard and shop piping systems, including trouble shooting9. Good knowledge of QA requirements and checkpoints10. Knowledgeable at recognizing and resolving problems encountered while making shipboard piping runs, i.e. interference, existing piping damage, valve leak by etc.11. Knowledgeable of material requirements, pipe/fitting size identification, pressure requirements12. Knowledge of piping support and hanger spacing requirements13. Qualify as a tack welder 14. Ability to use and read calibrated measuring equipment, (micrometers, 0-6 dial calipers, etc.)15. Effective ability to setup and use power tools, (threader, bender, hydro pump, etc.)16. Good Knowledge of hand tools and usage17. Good knowledge of power tool safety and inspection prior to use18. Proper procedures for running gas and electrical leads, (drop test, chaffing at doors and accesses, etc.)19. Effective knowledge of piping systems and their hazards, (CHT, Fuel, O2, Hydraulics, etc.)20. Effective knowledge of system requirements such as cleaning and draining prior to breaching or opening system21. OSHA and shipyard requirements prior to commencing work on any piping system22. Good knowledge of Std Items for welding, testing, maintaining cleanliness, etc.23. Good working knowledge of NSTM Chapter 505 for piping systems24. Ability to initiate WAF's25. Ability to submit hot workJOB REQUIREMENTSQUALIFICATIONS:1. High school diploma or GED and 2 to 3 years of related experience in field or equivalent combination of education and experience in field2. Ability to gain access to military installations3. Must pass drug test and background checkPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:1. Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly and seek help with weights over 50 pounds2. Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs/vertical ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This is a physically demanding position and may accommodate some physical disabilities. Physical dexterity may be required when performing walk thru and inspection of job sites. In the performance of the walk thru you will be required to transverse steep stairwells, vertical ladders and bending or stooping thru tight spaces. There may be occasional lifting of materials weighing not more than 50 pounds. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:This position works on the jobsite. There is exposure to hostile environments, loud noises, hazardous chemicals/fumes and airborne particles, smoke, extreme temperatures moving mechanical parts: high, precarious places. During work-site visits will be required to wear appropriate PPE including, but not limited to:
  • Hard Hat
  • Ear Plugs or Attenuator
  • Safety Shoes
  • Dust Mask or Respirator
  • Gloves
