Job Title Pharmacist-Dispensing Location USAF ACADEMY, CO US (Primary) Job Type Full-time Job Description SUMMARY Serve as a pharmacist in an ambulatory or in-patient care setting on an Air Force installation, performing professional duties which include consultative, educational, and administrative responsibilities. Select, compound, dispense, and preserve drugs, medicines, and other therapeutic agents. Provide guidance on difficult, complex, or unusual programs to medical staff/other pharmacists. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver pharmaceutical care to patients. Implement and coordinate the provision of patient pharmaceutical care services and programs.
  • Apply knowledge of pharmaceuticals, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacotherapeutics to assess and monitor patients' response to drug therapy.
  • May conduct interviews with patients or their caregivers for the purpose of establishing a medication history.
  • Identify and prevent potential drug related problems. Identify and resolve actual drug related problems.
  • Consult with other health care professionals.
  • Recommend therapeutic options for disease states.
  • Document and report adverse drug reactions or pharmacy errors through appropriate mechanisms.
  • Consult with the medical staff on drug therapy related issues.
  • Ensure patient medication counseling, drug regimen reviews, and professional standards defined by The Joint Commission (TJC), American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), and other applicable state and national standards.
  • Provide distributive services and pharmaceutical support to health care professionals within the Medical Group.
  • Screen medication orders and dispense medications including oral medications, small and large volume parenteral with additives, controlled substances, investigational drugs, and chemotherapeutic agents based on the knowledge of current pharmacy practice and standards.
  • Provide drug information to health care providers in either verbal or written format.
  • Provide professional guidance to staff on proper procedures concerning the storing, issuing, and controlling of pharmaceutical items.
  • Coordinate with leadership to ensure the provision of high quality, low risk dispensing processes and that all pharmacy operations meet established standards and organization goals.
  • Continuously review drug interactions and medication overlaps found in the prescription dispensing process and satisfactorily resolve them prior to the medication being dispensed.
  • Facilitate proper utilization of automated dispensing equipment to provide accurate, efficient filling of medication orders and prescriptions.
  • Ensure the assigned pharmacy operations comply with legal and regulatory requirements and meet customers' needs.
  • Ensure the accomplishment of established goals and objectives for the pharmacy.
  • Research, interpret, analyze, and apply TJC, APhA, ASHP, etc. regulatory references, policies, and guidelines as applicable.
  • Ensure adherence to established policies and procedures to accomplish the pharmacy mission. Assess and recommend revision to policies and procedures as needed to find ways to improve quality, timeliness, and efficiency of work.
  • May assist the supervisor in gathering data on pharmacy operations and evaluation cost, efficiency, clinical functions, quality improvement, workload, and drug usage.
  • May provide educational functions to improve the knowledge base of professional and non-professional staff and students as needed. Facilitate pharmacists' orientation, professional development, and competency assessment programs.
  • Participate in pharmacy staff development presentations or in-services training sessions.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES None. Job Requirements MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate from an institute accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) certificate and active licensure from a U.S. state, territory, or district.
  • Must have a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (PharmD), or a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) plus one of the following:
  • Certification by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties in one or more recognized practice areas appropriate for the privileges required (e.g. Pharmacotherapy, Ambulatory Care Pharmacy, etc.)
  • Completion of a clinical pharmacy residency or fellowship accredited by the ASHP or American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP)
  • Completion of a Post-Graduate Master of Science degree with emphasis in medication therapy management or direct patient care
  • Must have actively practiced in the field or in training for twenty-four (24) months within the last thirty-six (36) months.
  • Must possess a current Basic Life Support or equivalent certification.
  • Must be able to distinguish basic colors.
  • Must not be a defendant or the subject of an active malpractice action or felony case. Must not have reported allegations of misconduct to external regulatory agencies where there is reasonable cause (such as an arrest) that could have a serious impact on patient/staff welfare or safety.
  • No medical or mental health conditions which would impact ability to provide trusted care and continue with day-to-day work performance.
  • Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks.
  • Must obtain and maintain all required documents, certifications, licenses, etc. listed on the credentialling checklist, sent by Katmai's Credentialing Specialist, for this position for initial hire.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
  • Fundamental knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations, standards, and requirements governing drug management and dispensing.
  • Fundamental clinical/drug therapy knowledge to assess patients for over-the-counter medications, emergency and bridge prescription needs.
  • A working knowledge of pharmacy computer systems and automations such as electronic health record i.e. CHCS, AHLTA, Essentris (or equivalent), Innovations PharmAssist, GSL, etc.
  • A working knowledge of DoD/DHA prescription benefits program/process is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team when performing procedures that require making rapid and accurate observations or adjustments to established practices.
  • Excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people.
WORK SCHEDULE Full-time. May be required to work daytime, evening, weekend shifts and/or extended work hours to successfully complete project or assignment. TRAVEL All Market contractors are subject to working at a duty location at any of the Military Treatment Facilities (MTFs) or associated sub clinics within the Colorado Military Health System (CMHS). DRIVING REQUIREMENTS None. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed primarily indoors at a well-lit military treatment facility such as a clinic, outpatient facility or hospital. The environment is normally air conditioned, but conditions may change dependent upon circumstances. Work may need to be performed in a fast-paced environment requiring quick thinking and rapid judgements. Employee will be exposed to a wide variety of clients in differing functions, personalities and abilities. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids, latex, radiation or other contaminants and safety issues. May be exposed to infection or diseases from contact with patients. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Position consists of sitting for long periods of time, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, speaking or translating. Periods of walking, standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and lifting boxes weighing up to 30 pounds. Moderate to extended periods of office work with heavy periods of computer usage.
