Position Description Student Health Services at Texas Tech University is the on-campus medical care clinic exclusively for Texas Tech students. The mission of Student Health Services is to proudly provide compassionate, high-quality and accessible healthcare to Texas Tech students. This position is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the clinic patient flow and serving as the primary contact for patients. Responsible for scheduling appointments, preparing necessary paperwork before the patient visits, receiving patients, and maintaining records. In addition, this position is responsible for processing charges for clinic services, filing insurance claims, responding to requests for information from patients and insurance companies and maintaining related information for the department. Employees may have cash-handling responsibilities. Major/Essential Functions The Patient Services Specialist will help support the mission of Student Health Services by:
  • Supporting the department's success by verifying and researching various insurance tasks generated by our registration software.
  • Serving as the initial impression of our clinic by greeting patients with compassion, enthusiasm, and respect.
  • Providing education to patients on our services.
  • Listen carefully to patient needs presented face to face or over the telephone and communicate clear and accurate information in response.
  • Attending Red Raider Orientation (Freshman/Transfer Orientation) and professionally representing Student Health.
  • PSS has additional leadership duties as determined by the PSS Supervisor and will be expected to mentor and train PSS to meet departmental goals and initiatives.

The Patient Service Specialist must demonstrate excellent communication skills, training ability, effective problem solving, and professionalism. The patient services specialist must also be able to keep calm under pressure and be comfortable working with providers and nurses. Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a receptionist or a similar role.
  • Clinic experience scheduling appointments.
  • Cash handling experience.
Pay Statement Compensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as the institutional pay plan. Required Qualifications A High School diploma or GED. 1-year Customer Service, office, or related experience. Additional education may substitute for the experience requirement.
