Patient Service Representative

Join our team of Life Changers! UPMC is hiring a full-time Patient Service Representative to support the office in Mechanicsburg. This is a growing Women's Specialty office that serves the communities' needs, including Magee Womens Bladder and Magee Womens Pelvic and Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery. Must have either medical or office experience to be considered for this position. Hours for this position are Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm. No holidays or weekends! Travel will be required 50% of the time to offices in Harrisburg. Manager will discuss further during interview. Responsibilities:

  • Provides a warm greeting for all patients.
  • Guides patient through use of self-arrival technology or checks in patient at desk depending on patient preference.
  • Collects copayments and any other applicable patient payments at the point of service.
  • Confirms and/or updates patient registration information at checkout and schedules follow-up appointments.
  • Helps patients navigate the healthcare system by providing clear and understandable instructions.
  • Provides follow-up to unresolved patient questions or needs to ensure the appropriate continuity of care.
  • Understands the principles of service recovery and is both empowered and responsible for taking appropriate action to recover from service that does not meet the expectation of the UPMC Experience.
  • Registers patients in Biometrics (fingerprint recognition) program and explains benefits.
  • Promotes MyUPMC patient portal and assists patients in registration when applicable.
  • Confirms/verifies insurance benefits with the appropriate carrier via online verification systems or telephone inquiries.
  • Obtains the signature of patient or family member for consent to treatment and financial responsibility following the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) rules and regulations.
  • Appropriately distributes/triages phone calls to other areas and/or clinical providers.
  • Assists with administrative duties in the office including but not limited to scanning of medical records and faxing.
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education: Completion of high school graduate or equivalent is required.

Experience: Experience with personal computer-based applications, other various office equipment and proficient typing skills are preferred. Two years of experience in a medical/billing/fiscal or customer service function is preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred. Prior experience with Medipac, Epic, or other health records systems is preferred.
