Patient Care Technician

The Telemetry Unit is looking for a full-time patient care technician to join their team. The responsibilities include providing patient care, assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living, and assisting with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. The technician will also provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and report changes in patient status.

The patient care technician will perform the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities and at least four of the following BU identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal.

The technician will assure equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department, establish appropriate communication with other departments, and establish professional and respectful interpersonal relationships. They will also contribute to the universal unit activities including responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.

The technician will constructively receive feedback and direction, identify and communicate learning needs to the unit director, and take action to improve knowledge, skills, and performance. They will provide instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN and may apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.

The technician will demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the health care team, understand cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in the health professions, and care for patients and self by supporting safety in the workplace.

The technician will strictly adhere to all policies and procedures relative to patient care and hospital-related information, comply with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions, suggest and support changes within the department, and assume responsibility for assignment and view problems as challenges.

The technician will document in the medical record according to established procedures, perform assigned work in a timely and productive manner, complete department clerical functions as needed, and routinely perform and be fully competent with the UPMC nursing core assistant responsibilities including ADLs and point of care testing.
