Patient advocates guide patients through the healthcare system, ensuring they receive appropriate care and support. Advocates schedule appointments and seek second opinions, help patients find financial and legal resources, negotiate medical bills, resolve disputes with insurance and providers, communicate with healthcare teams on patients' behalf and help fill out forms. They also explain medical bills and diagnoses and support patients' rights. Responsibilities Include
- Arranging medical appointments, second opinions and referrals as needed.
- Assisting patients in finding financial, legal or social support resources and helping them navigate insurance coverage.
- Reviewing medical bills for accuracy and negotiating with providers or insurers, resolving billing disputes.
- Mediating conflicts between patients and healthcare providers and ensuring patients' concerns are addressed.
- Communicating with doctors, nurses and insurers on patients' behalf and explaining diagnoses, treatments and billing to patients.
- Keeping detailed notes of patient interactions and supporting patients who cannot advocate for themselves.
Ideal Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in healthcare, social work or related field or equivalent experience.
- Indepth knowledge of medical terminology, billing and insurance processes.
- Strong problemsolving, negotiation and communication skills.
- Empathy and ability to advocate for diverse patients; understanding of HIPAA and patientrights regulations.
- Availability for Monday-Thursday 7:45 a.m.-2 p.m. and Friday 7:45 a.m.-2:30 p.m. shifts.
