DescriptionGENERAL SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Business Office Manager, the Patient Account Representative is responsible for the coordination of all necessary billing documents and the processing of third-party payor bills. Assigned duties are implemented in a manner appropriate to the age-specific needs of the patients served. Type of supervision exercised: none. Jobs reporting to this position: none. EDUCATION: High School graduate or equivalent is required. Bookkeeping and accounting courses preferred. WORK EXPERIENCE: Minimum of one (1) year in health care business office setting required. Experience in hospital/medical billing preferred. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF JOB: Transmits Medicare and Blue Cross claims via teleprocessing. Coordinates process of gathering information re third-party billing. Prepares invoices for patients with self-pay balances. Maintains appropriate third-party logs and statistical data. Posts all third-party and/or patient payments and adjustments to accounts receivable via in-house on-line computer. Under the supervision of the Business Office Manager, contacts third party payors and/or self-pay patients with regard to past due accounts. Handles all telephone and/or written correspondence on all patient accounts independently. Prepares and sends monthly statements to patients. Provides assistance to Business Office Manager in preparation of monthly reports and monthly accounts receivable analysis. Provides assistance to patients with regard to balances, questions about coverage, claims, etc. Works closely with Data Processing, Medical Records, and all ancillary departments. Coordinates process of training new employees as directed by the Business Office Manager. Participates in formal training and educational seminars as required. Assists third-party auditors for fiscal year end audits. Travels to storage warehouse to retrieve old accounts or documents as required. SPECIAL EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Must possess exceptional organizational skills. Ability to perform detailed work, and to do mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately required. Must be able to demonstrate proficient personal computer skills. Ability to type 40 WPM accurately required. Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills required for effective interaction with management, staff, patients, and outside agencies.
