Patient Access Representative I

Alton Memorial Hospital is looking to hire a Patient Access Representative I PRN Only.

Schedule: PRN Only

Shifts: Varied

Must pick up at least 32 hours per month

This PRN role will float to multiple departments

Role Purpose

The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for our patients and must represent BJC with the highest standard of customer service and compassion. This role facilitates all components of the patient's entrance into any BJC facility and requires emotional intelligence, professionalism, and the ability to make a personal connection.

This position significantly impacts reimbursements and denial prevention through accurate collection of demographics, insurance information, benefit verification, and point-of-service collection. Selecting the correct patient from the Master Patient Index (MPI) is critical to patient safety.

Responsibilities
  • Utilize critical thinking to problem-solve a variety of situations, anticipate patient needs, and respond appropriately
  • Communicate professionally and positively with patients, families, and co-workers in person, online, or by phone
  • Perform hospital registration and scheduling within multiple BJC systems
  • Ensure proper patient identification, insurance verification, document scanning, and retrieval
  • Validate orders for completeness and accuracy
  • Educate patients on preparation instructions and financial responsibilities
  • Collect applicable payments
  • Understand and enforce compliance with Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP), HIPAA, Patient Bill of Rights, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, and JCAHO requirements
  • Ensure each patient completes HIPAA acknowledgment

Minimum Requirements
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience: No experience required
Preferred Requirements
  • Education: Associate's Degree
  • Experience: 2 years
  • Licenses & Certifications: CHAA
