Patent Manager

The Patent Manager at Mount Sinai Innovation Partners (MSIP) is a member of the Intellectual Property Team. Reporting to the Director, Intellectual Property, the Patent Manager is responsible for managing the development and protection of an assigned portfolio of intellectual property assets. Working closely with inventors, outside counsel, and MSIP's internal teams, the Patent Manager coordinates the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, ensures timely execution of IP-related documents, and supports strategic decision-making related to the institution's IP portfolio. The Patent Manager assists the Director and Senior Manager, Intellectual Property, with patent strategy meetings, budget and invoice management, and communication with internal stakeholders. This role supports the mission of MSIP by aligning patent activities with commercialization goals and institutional priorities, while promoting best practices in IP operations.

Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in Science or Engineering

3+ years experience (5 preferred) in a scientific research and development environment or in a law firm setting, academic technology transfer experience preferred

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with an intermediate level of oversight; strong attention to detail and accuracy

Experience interacting with internal stakeholders, such as inventors, business development and licensing professionals, and/or attorney, in a matrix, customer-focused organization

Awareness of patent terminology and intellectual property concepts

Experience resolving issues proactively and following up across teams

Preferred experience with Minuet, CPI, or other intellectual property management software

Intermediate to advanced computer skills in MS Office and Patent Management databases

Ability to work on site in Manhattan Office 3 days/week

Licensing requirement: Candidate must meet the qualifications for registration as a Patent Agent; USPTO Registered Patent Agency preferred

Compensation Statement: The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $64,526.72 - $123,599.87 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.

Responsibilities

IP Portfolio Management:

  • Under the direction of the Director, Intellectual Property, manages the preparation and prosecution of an assigned portfolio of U.S. and foreign intellectual property assets; coordinates directly with outside counsel and inventors to ensure timely and high-quality filings; facilitates execution of patent-related documents including declarations, assignments, and powers of attorney.
  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders across MSIPincluding Business Development & Licensing, Strategic Alliances, Finance & Operations, and Administrationto ensure IP activities support commercialization strategies and institutional priorities.
  • Assists the Director and Senior Manager, Intellectual Property with the preparation of agendas, materials, and follow-up actions for patent strategy meetings.

IP Operations:

  • Assists with the financial administration of the IP portfolio, including opening financial matters with outside counsel, reviewing invoices, and coordinating annuity and maintenance fee payments through external providers.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date IP records in internal databases (e.g., Inteum); supports periodic audits and resolves discrepancies in coordination with relevant stakeholders.
  • Supports the development and implementation of internal procedures and best practices that promote operational efficiency, data integrity, and compliance with institutional and legal standards.
