The Brooklyn Public Library Adult Learning Program seeks a Teaching Assistant to support WIOA program participants in earning their HSE diploma through pathways such as GED, Regents, NEDP, or prep classes. The role involves co-facilitating small group instruction in a mixed-level classroom, providing feedback and support to classroom instructors, coaching students, and collaborating with instructional staff to meet program goals. The Teaching Assistant will work under the guidance of the HSE Program Specialist to monitor participant progress and ensure program quality.

Responsibilities include:
  • Engaging students in a learning community and co-facilitating reading and writing instruction within Pre-HSE/HSE classrooms; supporting and enhancing lesson plans focused on math, reading, writing, English literacy, and workplace skills; guiding participants through individualized lesson plans.
  • Collaborating with instructors and case managers to support participants goals of obtaining their HSE diploma; using motivational strategies to encourage engagement and learning.
  • Instructing, guiding, evaluating participants work; maintaining records of attendance and progress.
  • Assisting with outreach, registration, assessments, orientation, and follow-up, including online assessments and self-assessment tools.
  • Supporting participants in applying for the GED exam, tracking attendance and progress, and producing reports as needed; ensuring timely data entry.
  • Staying updated on adult education skills and training; attending NYC RAEN training and team meetings.
  • Providing guidance to instructional staff and reinforcing skills to prepare participants for the TABE assessment.
  • Traveling to multiple locations as required.
  • Minimum qualifications include a High School Diploma or Equivalent, strong knowledge of ABE/HSE skills, excellent computer skills, and experience working in adult education. The candidate should be motivated to stay current with new technologies and adult education practices, and able to work in a fast-paced, team environment with strong organizational and communication skills. Ability to travel between locations is required.

    This is a part-time, grant-funded position with hours up to 19 per week at $25/hour. Work schedules include M/W 10-2, T/TH 3-8, and some Saturdays 10-4, subject to change. Locations vary across Brooklyn, including Central, Eastern Parkway, New Lots, Flatbush, Pacific, Bedford, and other satellite branches.
