Job Description :

A paralegal who reports directly to the City Attorney, and performs a variety of tasks related to the operations of the City Attorney's Office and the City of Lynchburg (City).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following:
  • Receives, manages, and responds to Virginia Freedom of Information Act (VFOIA) requests City-wide and manages documents and computer software related to the same. Serves as the City's Chief Freedom of Information Officer. Works with VFOIA officers City-wide.
  • Manages and ensures the correct retention, storage, and disposal of City records subject to the Virginia Public Records Act (VPRA). Serves as the City's Chief Public Records Officer. Works with VPRA records retention officers City-wide.
  • Researches and analyzes statutes, judicial decisions, legal articles, advisory opinions, and treatises.
  • Communicates with various persons within the City-system, at all levels, regarding matters concerning the operations of the City Attorney's Office, as well as with members of the general public.
  • Prepares a variety of letters, training materials, articles, presentations, and official documents related to the operations of the City Attorney's Office and the City.
  • Manages and ensures the proper storage of testamentary and other sensitive documents belonging to the City.
  • Independently manages multiple assigned tasks and timely completes the same.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
  • Performs other duties as required by the City Attorney.
  • When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform the same as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following:No supervisory responsibilities required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCEAssociate's degree or higher (or equivalent work experience in lieu of the same). Experience working as a paralegal is preferred, but not required.
