Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Senior Coding Manager, the Technical Advisor oversees, reviews, and advises on the integrity of the ambulatory surgery coding/charging programs for the Mass General Brigham (MGB) Coding Department. The role involves advising on external/internal coding reviews and audits, understanding new coding/billing regulations, addressing coding and billing issues, providing education and workflow training for outpatient coding, and managing claim edits and denials related to ambulatory surgery coding/charging. The Technical Advisor also contributes to MGB Coding and Revenue Cycle projects, policy and procedure writing, system implementation projects, and coding education. Collaboration with Coding leadership, Data Quality Specialists, and Coders is essential to ensure an efficient and accurate coding program.

QualificationsEducation

Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management required

Experience

3-5 years of clinical coding experience within a healthcare setting, emphasizing coding accuracy and compliance

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Deep knowledge of coding systems such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS, along with familiarity with coding guidelines and regulations (e.g., HIPAA, HITECH Act)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, capable of reviewing complex medical records for coding errors or inconsistencies
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with healthcare professionals
  • Proficiency in coding software and electronic health record (EHR) systems
  • Attention to detail and ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities
  • Up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes in clinical coding
