The Union has approximately 425 staff in sixteen offices from Boston to Miami. 32BJ SEIU represents over 180,000 property service workers including janitors, security officers, airport workers, and food service employees in 11 states and Washington, DC. 32BJ is an affiliate of SEIU, the Service Employees International Union, which has 2 million members dedicated to raising industry standards and making life better for all working families and communities.

ROLE DESCRIPTION:

The Organizing Department has several levels of staff, based on a candidate's previous labor union experience and positions. Below are the 32BJ positions:

§ Organizers: The Organizer builds trust with workers, recruits and develops worksite leaders, and moves worker majorities into public action through individual and group meetings. 32BJ Organizers are part of a team of staff and members who support workers in their fight to form a union in their workplace. Organizers report to an Organizing Team Leader or Lead Organizer.

§ Organizing Team Lead (OTL): At the OTL level, 32BJ staff fulfill the responsibilities of an Organizer, while also taking on the assignment of directing some Organizers in their day-to-day work. OTLs provide input in campaign strategy and lead by example. OTLs report to a Lead Organizer or an Organizing Coordinator.

§ Lead Organizer: The Lead Organizer is responsible for driving the field and strategic work of a large-scale organizing campaign in one of 32BJ's core industries. They supervise a team of Organizers/Organizing Team Leader/member organizers and report to an Organizing Coordinator or Deputy Organizing Director. Lead Organizers also participate in multi-department campaign planning sessions and help develop and lead team and departmental trainings.

§ Organizing Coordinator: Reporting to a Deputy Organizing Director, the Coordinator is part of a cross-departmental team. The Organizing Coordinator participates in senior staff meetings and union wide planning sessions, leads planning and execution of departmental trainings, and supervises Lead Organizers and sometimes OTLs and Organizers. The Organizing Coordinator performs a range of duties, which may vary according to the needs of the overall program, a specific action, or the needs of the organization.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Enter New Hire Staff and Terminations, Brigade, NOTPs, Fellows, & Apprentices into HR Passport (HRP).
  • Meet with candidates to assemble New Hire packets, collect documentation and send to Payroll and HR for processing.
  • Use Spiceworks ticketing system to fulfill incoming requests from the Organizing Department.
  • Book Travel/Hotel/Car/Train reservations using the Concur system/BCD travel negotiating and ensuring best prices/options.
  • Reserve and set-up Conference rooms/meeting rooms in the office space.
  • Handle Logistics of events such as ordering food/beverages, setting up tables, scanning members.
  • Maintain and order office supply through Weeks Lerman via Office Services Request.
  • Order union merchandise for events and rallies from our trusted vendors.
  • Process Check Request(s), Invoices for all outside vendors, Brigade/NOTP Expenses using the Bp Logix system.
  • Submit weekly Timesheets every Friday.
  • Log all Amex Card transactions when used, for the monthly reconciliation.
  • Trouble shoot office equipment with the help of IT Union Help Desk.
  • Create shipping Labels using UPS online software to ship union merchandise or packages between offices.
  • Other administrative duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

For any of the positions listed above, Local 32BJ seeks candidates with professional experience in labor union campaigns; applicants with this experience may be considered for one or more of the above positions. Successful candidates for our organizing positions will bring most, if not all, of the following professional skills:

  • Ability to build trust with workers and develop worksite leaders in union campaigns.
  • Experience planning and executing public actions by workers involved in union campaigns.
  • Experience with supporting organizing committees and workers through difficult union campaigns.
  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Bilingual in one or more of the following languages is preferred: Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Arabic.

WORK ENVIRNMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Positions are full-time and often require long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Positions require travel to worksites and occasional overnight interstate travel as needed by various campaigns.
  • Valid driver's license and car with insurance required.
  • Ability to ascend and descend stairs, walk through large work sites, and participate in marches and demonstrations that are loud and can be three to four hours in duration.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

Positions available are listed below:

  • The salary for Organizers is $65,550.82
  • The salary for OTL is $85,243.14
  • The salary for Lead Organizer is $99,420.16
  • The salary for Organizing Coordinator is $109,999.76
