Organist and Music Director - Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Lorain

The Church of the Redeemer in beautiful downtown Lorain is searching for an organist/music director. We are a small church with an active outreach program, equipped with a 17-rank Blanchard organ, a French Harpsichord by Earl Russel, and a Steinway Baby Grand. Compensation

This W-4 position offers $200 per Sunday, paid in two installments (15th and 30th of each month) from September to May. Worker's compensation is provided. An American Guild of Organists student membership will be paid by the employer.

The Organist is expected to be present or arrange coverage for major services including Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, the Great Vigil of Easter, and Easter. Compensation for these services varies, with Christmas Eve at $200 (housing provided), Maundy Thursday at $75, Good Friday at $150, and the Great Vigil at $150. Additional services such as Choral Evensong, Nine Lessons and Carols, and Ash Wednesday are compensated at $150, budget permitting. Transportation costs from outside Lorain are reimbursed at $15 per service.

Weddings and funerals are right-of-first-refusal, with rates negotiated as needed. Time-off requests should be made at least two weeks in advance, with the employee responsible for arranging substitute musicians.

General Understandings and Covenants
  • Music is central to parish life, and the Organist plays an important ministry role, engaging with choir members, the congregation, and the community.
  • The Organist recognizes and facilitates the pastoral dimension of this role.
  • Regular meetings between the employee and employer are expected to promote collegiality.
  • A variety of musical styles and instruments are encouraged for services.
Employee Responsibilities

The Organist shall:

  • Provide organ music, direct/assist the choir at the 10:30 am Sunday service, and select appropriate hymns and music.
  • Perform organ and choral music for major services and additional services as negotiated.
  • Communicate music selections to the Office Manager and Rector by 8 AM Wednesday.
  • Rehearse weekly with the choir.
  • Collaborate with the employer on music program planning.
  • Manage the music budget, including purchasing music and hiring musicians.
  • Arrange fundraising activities to support the music budget.
Additional Duties
  • Obtain permissions for copyrighted materials and avoid unauthorized duplication.
  • Report on maintenance needs of musical instruments.
  • Own rights to works composed or arranged by the Organist.
  • Participate in professional development if job requirements change.
  • Provide 30 days' notice for employment termination or non-renewal.
The Choir

The Redeemer Choir has about 8 singers, including 3 paid choral scholars from Oberlin College. Rehearsals are Sundays at 9:45 am, with performances during the 10:30 am service. The choir sings psalms, anthems, and occasionally Anglican chant, using resources like St. James Music Press.
