This role involves coordinating and managing cadaver donors for organ procurement, including on-call responsibilities. The coordinator directs clinical support for potential donors, educates healthcare professionals on organ procurement, reports to regulatory agencies like UNOS, and participates in clinical research.Core Job Functions
- Respond on-site to potential donor referrals across Donor Service Area Hospitals in Dade, Monroe, Broward, Collier, Palm Beach, St. Lucie counties, and the Bahamas.
- Communicate with the AOC to evaluate donation suitability based on hospital charts, health status, staff dialogue, and physical exams.
- Assess potential cadaver donors to ensure they meet medical donation criteria.
- Request and interpret laboratory and diagnostic procedures for donor evaluation and management.
- Develop donor maintenance plans with the AOC and LAORA Medical Director to preserve organs.
- Coordinate donor maintenance upon brain death declaration with hospital staff.
- Report relevant clinical information to AOC and Medical Director promptly.
- Ensure organs are preserved appropriately from brain death or consent, following protocols and statutes.
- Participate in Donation after Cardiac Death (DCD), collaborating with hospital staff.
- Perform on-call duties in 12-hour shifts, responding to clinical activities as scheduled.
- Perform advanced clinical procedures, e.g., arterial and central venous line placement.
- Mentor and precept new clinical staff.
- Support clinical activities for DMC I and Referral Responders.
Administrative
- Coordinate with hospital personnel and families for informed consent, adhering to Florida law and policies.
- Attend monthly staff meetings and maintain IT proficiency for data entry.
- Communicate with Medical Examiners and transplant centers for organ donation and placement.
- Maintain activity logs, document clinical information, and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Complete UNOS forms and conduct donor chart audits as needed.
Educational
- Support family grief support and post-donation care programs.
- Educate hospital staff and the community about organ donation through in-services and outreach.
- Participate in seminars, workshops, and maintain licensure.
Research
- Assist in data collection for research publications and initiatives.
- Participate in organ/tissue allocation for research when appropriate.
- Stay current with clinical knowledge and research publications.
Working Conditions
- Potential exposure to communicable diseases with proper OSHA precautions.
- Occasional organ, blood, and tissue transfers.
- Extended travel, including long drives and air transportation, for organ evaluation and recovery.
Core Requirements
- Associate's degree in nursing or a medical-related field from an accredited university.
- Three years of Critical Care/Intensive Care experience or 1 year of OPO experience.
- Relevant certifications/licenses preferred: CPTC, RN, CRT, MD, EMT/Paramedic, with ACLS, PALS, BLS.
