About the Family Defense Program

The Family Defense Program (FDP) aims to inform and empower immigrants, especially mixed-status families and long-time residents with uncertain futures. Through community outreach, education, and direct representation, FDP strives to keep Florida families safe and together. The team conducts legal screening clinics, Know Your Rights presentations, and works with pro bono attorneys and volunteers to assist thousands of immigrants in obtaining permanent residency and citizenship.

Fall 2025 Legal Externship Opportunities for the Family Defense Program

Externs will support FDP staff attorneys and clients by assisting with:

  • Legal screenings and clinics
  • Applications for relief such as TPS, asylum, and other immigration benefits
  • Legal proceedings before immigration court and USCIS
  • Rapid response work and outreach
  • Legal research and writing
  • Know Your Rights presentations

Qualifications

  • Fluency in Spanish or Haitian Kreyol required
  • Currently enrolled at an accredited law school
  • Willingness to undergo extensive background checks, including FBI, statewide repository, and sex offender registry
