Position Summary

We are seeking the Associate Director for Population Science (AD for Pop Sci) at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. This individual will hold a primary faculty appointment within the appropriate School/Division/Department identified based on the selected candidate's relevant education and experience, with a secondary administrative appointment as the AD for Pop Sci in the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, within the School of Medicine. The appointment and rank in an academic department will be determined by the applicant's qualifications. The AD for Pop Sci is both the scientific and administrative leader for fostering bi-directional communication and authentic engagement between LCCC members and relevant stakeholders on the topic of population science related to cancer. This leader is responsible for establishing a vision and mission for Population Science that is co-developed in collaboration with other leaders and aligns with the LCCC strategic plan.

Responsibilities include: developing the long-term vision, goals, policies and procedures to support the mandatory population science component of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) P30 Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG); implementing strategies, tactics and metrics to accomplish population science goals; monitoring and evaluating Pop Sci activities and progress for efficacy and alignment with the strategic plan; recruiting additional scientists and advocating for postdoctoral positions to broaden the breadth and depth of Pop Sci at LCCC; fostering inter- and intra- programmatic transdisciplinary and team science that features population science; advocating for institutional and community-based infrastructure and resources to ensure the success of population science at LCCC.

Additional duties include: monitoring needs of population scientists to identify beneficial shared resources for program members; responding effectively to EAB feedback about Pop Sci at LCCC; working collaboratively with fellow Associate Directors to advance plans to enhance inclusivity and expand the biomedical cancer research workforce and leadership.

UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) is one of the largest research organizations in the UNC system. It is the only public NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center within North Carolina, supporting 425 members, 605 staff, nine research programs, and 32 shared resources. LCCC has been rated an exceptional NCI center in the last three CCSG cycles (2010, 2015, 2020), making it eligible to extend the current cycle to 2027.

LCCC focuses on advancing cancer research to improve patient outcomes. It is located in a dedicated 79,000 sq ft building on the UNC medical campus, with additional research facilities and patient care in the Basnight Cancer Hospital. The faculty represent a broad scope of cancer research across multiple departments and schools.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • PhD or other related Doctorate degree.
  • Strong track record of collaborations with population scientists.
  • Relevant leadership experience.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Relevant NCI cancer center program leadership experience.
