Salary: $36,493.00 Annually Location : New Bern, NC Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: 10343 Department: Social Services Division: Child Services Opening Date: 07/25/2025 Closing Date: 8/5/2025 11:59 PM Eastern Primary Purpose The major purpose of this position is to assist and support all social worker staff in the Child and Family Services Division to ensure state and county compliance with data and service delivery. This position is directly supervised by the Child & Family Services Division Administrative Services Assistant. Essential Functions
- Keying of the 5027's when a case is opened/closed and the 5104's when an investigation is completed
- Keying in all information in the county and state when an in home or a foster care file is opened and closed
- Filing closed cases in the file room and making sure that they are labeled properly when there are multiple volumes, maintain a log of checked out files, keep the files in the CPS file room and the files located in the bulk storage room organized
- Complete the Semi-annual purging of CPS files which includes boxing, labeling, keying them with the purge code them in the County system and creating a detailed list of those files and where they are located in the event one of those files has to be retrieved.
- Obtain Social Security cards for the Foster Children as needed by the Social Worker. This worker must obtain and provide to the Social Security Administration true copies of the child's medical records and the Non-Secure Custody order or court order showing proof of DSS custody.
- Provide back up to others on the clerical team such as Setting up cases, moving files off the server and placing them in the appropriate folders, logging intake reports on the spreadsheet, typing case decision letters, running criminal and central registry checks and lunch coverage at the Hope Family Resource center and anytime HFRC clerical is out on leave.
- Create and maintain various spreadsheets and templates, ensure that the forms cabinet and the supply cabinet in the CPS fax room are well stocked, distribute faxes, maintain the fax/copy room.
- Clerical assistance to the DSS attorney when needed. Serve as notary for the Social Workers and DSS attorney.
- Transport case files to and from the Havelock office twice a week.
- Assist the Division in copying records that are requested for review and audits and records that are subpoenaed to court.
- This position also assists in disaster relief efforts that includes but is not limited to shelter duty. Assignment to emergency shelter duty during times of potentially dangerous or manmade disasters is an essential function of this position and you shall be required to fulfill these duties when instructed. Position may perform other duties as assigned by the Administrative Services Assistant V, Social Worker Program Administrator I, Social Work Program Manager, Director, and Deputy Director.
Minimum Education and Experience Graduation from high school and demonstrated possession of knowledges, skills and abilities gained through at least one year of office assistant/secretarial experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities General knowledge of office practices and procedures. Ability to type with accuracy at the speed required by the position. Ability to correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and typing errors. Ability to use judgment in organizing and establishing formats. Ability to demonstrate exemplary job performance in multi-tasking, being accurate and effective in a timely manner. Additional Information Physical Requirements Position is responsible for documenting information, record keeping and maintaining files which include lifting, transporting, purging, filing in cabinets above shoulder level. North Carolina Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in the retirement system and must contribute 6% of their gross salary each pay period. Once eligibility requirements are met, employees will be able to receive monthly payments for life based on their salary, age, and years of service credit. NC401k Craven County contributes 2% of eligible employees' gross salary into the 401(k) account regardless of the employee's deferral amount. In addition, the County matches employee deferrals up to an additional 3%. Annual Leave Regular full-time employees earn annual leave based upon years of service. Eligible employees begin to accrue annual leave as soon as they start but must complete a six month probationary period before they are eligible to use annual leave.
- Less than two years of service earns 10 days per year.
- Two but less than five years of service earns 12 days per year.
- Five but less than 10 years of service earns 15 days per year.
- 10 but less than 20 years of service earns 18 days per year.
- 20 or more years of service earns 20 days per year.
Sick Leave Regular full-time employees earn 3.69 hours of sick leave per pay period. Craven County accepts eligible sick leave from the State of North Carolina, any of its political subdivisions, any local government entity or authority, or municipality in North Carolina. Paid Holidays County employees receive 11-14 paid holidays annually. The Board of County Commissioners may adjust the holiday schedule as deemed necessary. Longevity Eligible employees earn $200 in longevity after five years of service by October 31 of the qualifying year. Longevity benefits increase $25 per year up to a maximum of $1,000. Merit Program Craven County offers a merit program. Up to 56% of eligible employees may receive a performance-based merit increase each year. Supplemental Benefits County employees are also offered a variety of supplemental benefits to select at their own expense such as Life Insurance, Vision Insurance, Flexible Spending Accounts, Critical Care policies, Cancer policies, Long-term Care policies, Hospitalization policies, 457b Deferred Compensation Plan and Aflac.
