Are you interested in mission-driven legal work? Do you enjoy helping others? Join the Office of the Attorney General's (OAG) Child Support Division (CSD) to promote responsible parenting, involve both parents in their children's lives, and ensure children in Texas receive support.

Assistant Attorneys General (AAGs) represent the State of Texas in family law proceedings to establish paternity, obtain court orders for support and healthcare, and enforce or modify child support orders. CSD staff collaborate with other agencies and organizations to serve Texas families. AAGs gain trial court experience, develop negotiation skills, and become experts in family law. They are part of a statewide team dedicated to supporting families, enjoy public service, work-life balance, and camaraderie.

Key Responsibilities
  • Represent the State of Texas in legal proceedings related to child support and medical support.
  • Represent the State in administrative hearings.
  • Provide legal advice and technical assistance to the Child Support Program.
  • Develop and deliver training.
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant law and policies.
  • Attend work regularly and adhere to schedule.
  • Ensure confidentiality and security of sensitive information.
  • Follow all agency policies, including ethics and integrity standards.
Qualifications

Assistant Attorney General (AAG) I: Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school, licensed and in good standing with the Texas State Bar, knowledge of Family Law and Texas Family Code, skills in legal writing, negotiation, legal research, communication, judgment, and teamwork. Ability to work in person at the assigned location, handle multiple tasks, travel up to 25%, lift 30 lbs., and work more than 40 hours as needed.

AAG II: Includes all I qualifications plus at least 1 year of full-time legal experience.

AAG III: Includes all II qualifications plus an additional year of legal experience.

AAG IV: Includes all III qualifications plus an additional year of legal experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years' experience in Family Law cases.
  • Jury trial experience.
  • High-volume legal practice experience.
  • Proficiency in Spanish reading, writing, and speaking.
