Overview A Nurse Practitioner, certified under section 6910 of the New York State Education Law is a licensed registered nurse who provides primary health care in accordance with written policies approved by nursing/medical administration. Demonstrates accountability for nursing practice and advocates for patients and supports patient rights. In the area of clinical expertise of the geriatric patient, he/she assumes clinical, educational research and performance improvement responsibilities for implementing the nursing process within the framework and philosophy of the department of Nursing Responsibilities 1* Keeps knowledge current by self-directed learning and attendance at educational programs. 2.* Assesses the health status of clients/families by means of comprehensive health history and physical examinations. 3.* Initiates therapeutic treatments and laboratory examinations. Interprets findings and alters plan of care including, but not limited to, prescribing and altering medication regimens and ordering blood according to designated protocols. 4.* Provides direct care to selected patients for the purpose of transmitting clinical expertise. 5. Documents findings and plan of care in patient's medical record 6.* Consults with physician and works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary health care team to promote optimal patient outcomes. 7.* Acts as a consultant for the geriatric patients and collaborates with RN's in assessing patient's integumentary status establishing the size, stage of pressure ulcers and orders and/or recommends the appropriate treatment - i.e., dressing, specialty bed. 8.* Collaborates with Staff Development to develop and implement educational programs, new policies and procedures or standards to meet the needs of the geriatric patient o patient at risk for skin breakdown and/or pressure ulcers (Integumentary system). 9.* Plans, develops and initiates appropriate teaching programs for the patient/family in collaboration with other members of the health care team in the areas of health promotion, maintenance and disease prevention. 10.* Patient care responsibilities are delivered with a knowledge of patient growth and development and are appropriate to the ages of the patients served. 11. Initiates and/or participates in approved medical and nursing research studies. 12. Contributes to the maintenance of a positive image of professional nursing in the medical center and in the local community by implementing programs that recognize nursing as a profession of worth. 18.* Participates in departmental and interdisciplinary committees which influence and/or determine policies affecting nursing practice. 20.* Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. * Indicates an Essential Job Function _______________________________________________________________________________________ OTHER JOB DUTIES Performs other related duties as required. - Completion of an accredited Acute Nurse Practitioner program with current NYS Licensure and registration
