Network Operations Specialist (Tier II/III)
Location: Indianapolis, IN or Bratenhal, OH
Clearance Required: Secret (Tier 5 / IT-I)
Work Schedule: Full-time, 24/7 shift rotation to provide continuous network support
Position Summary:
The Network Operations Specialist (Tier II/III) plays a critical role in maintaining the stability, performance, and security of the DFAS DRAS-M IL-5 Cloud Tenant networks. This position ensures uninterrupted access to DFAS financial management systems by monitoring and managing multiple segmented virtual networks that support development, testing, production, troubleshooting, CAT, and security functions. As part of the 24/7 operations team, the specialist will monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve network issues, configure and maintain firewalls and boundary security devices, and support secure connectivity between DFAS, DoD, and Cloud Service Provider (CSP) environments. The role requires deep technical expertise in DoD network operations, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to respond rapidly to incidents to ensure mission-critical financial systems remain available and secure.
Responsibilities:
- Provide Tier II/III network monitoring, operations, and troubleshooting for all DFAS IL-5 cloud tenant networks.
- Configure, maintain, and secure DoD firewalls, boundary defense devices, routers, and switches.
- Ensure proper segmentation and monitoring of six IL-5 cloud networks: Development, Test, Production, Troubleshooting, CAT, and Security Infrastructure.
- Support secure connectivity to the Boundary Cloud Access Point (BCAP), DMZ, and DISA-managed network infrastructure.
- Collaborate with Cloud Service Providers and DFAS enterprise network teams to maintain interoperability and secure hybrid-cloud operations.
- Monitor and troubleshoot network traffic for anomalies, latency, outages, or unauthorized activity.
- Respond to security incidents and coordinate with the Cybersecurity Service Provider (CSSP) to contain and remediate threats.
- Escalate unresolved issues to higher-level engineers and support staff while maintaining documentation of all incidents.
- Support compliance with DoD STIGs, RMF controls, and DFAS network architecture standards.
- Assist with capacity planning, upgrades, and continuous optimization of network performance.
- Document network architecture diagrams, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and incident response records.
Required Qualifications:
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in network operations or administration within a DoD or IL-5+ environment.
- Strong working knowledge of routing, switching, firewalls, VPNs, and boundary defense technologies.
- DoD 8570 IAT Level III certification required (e.g., CASP CE, CCNP, CISA, CISSP (or Associate))
- Proficiency with DoD network monitoring and analysis tools.
- Hands-on experience troubleshooting complex network issues in secure, mission-critical environments.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to document and brief technical issues to leadership.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of DoD network operations experience.
- Cisco CCNP, Juniper JNCIP, or equivalent advanced network certification.
- Experience supporting DISA-managed BCAP/DMZ infrastructure.
- Familiarity with Oracle/Java stack integration and DFAS financial system requirements.
- Prior experience in 24/7 Security Operations Center (SOC) or Network Operations Center (NOC) environments.
