Job Description :

The NDT Manager shall have the skills and knowledge to establish techniques; to interpret codes, standards, and specifications; designate the technique to be used; and to verify the adequacy of procedures. The NDT Manager shall have familiarity with the following common methods and techniques: Liquid Penetrant (PT), Magnetic Particle (MT), Eddy Current (ET), Ultrasonic (UT), and Radiography (RT). The NDT Manager shall be capable of conducting or directing the training and examining of NDT personnel in the methods for which the NDT Manager is qualified. For the purposes of this position, the term nondestructive testing (NDT) will be equivalent to nondestructive inspection (NDI) and nondestructive evaluation (NDE).

Major Position Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Have the skills and knowledge to set up and standardize equipment, process parts, interpret and evaluate for acceptance or rejection, and document results.
  • Be thoroughly familiar with the scope and limitations of the technique/method.
  • Have the skills and knowledge to conduct system performance checks in accordance with the applicable process standard.
  • Be capable of providing the necessary guidance and/or management to trainees and Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 personnel.
  • Have the skills and knowledge to interpret codes, standards, and other contractual documents that control NDT methods.
  • Have a basic knowledge of relevant product manufacturing and inspection technology.
  • Be capable of assuming technical responsibility for the NDT facility and staff.
  • Be capable of selecting the method and technique for a specific test.
  • Be capable of preparing and verifying the adequacy of procedures and work instructions.
  • Approve NDT procedures and work instructions for technical adequacy. Obtain customer approval, as required.
  • Have a general knowledge of other NDT methods and product manufacturing and test technologies used by GD-OTS.
  • Be capable of providing or directly training, examination, and certification of personnel.
  • Conduct NDT for the acceptance of parts and document the results if a demonstration of proficiency in this ability is included in the practical examination.
  • Maintain NDT equipment and facilities using best management practices. Establish and maintain a robust preventative maintenance program.
  • Obtain and maintain required license and permits to operate NDT equipment.
  • When required by the written practice, be capable of auditing outside agencies to ensure the requirements of the written practice are met.
  • Be capable of supporting internal audit activities, including NADCAP self-assessments.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills:

  • Working knowledge of applicable manufacturing processes.
  • Practical knowledge of quality management and quality control inspection systems.
  • Medium to advanced math and print reading skills.
  • Ability to use computers for data entry.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with other departments, and customers to solve problems.
  • Ability to learn and comply with all company policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or science discipline and a minimum of 10 years of related experience in NDT (specifically radiography). Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) regarding the following standards:
  • NAS410, NAS Certification & Qualification of Nondestructive Test Personnel Standard Practice (equivalent in technical content to EN 4179)
  • Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A, Personnel Qualification and Certification in Nondestructive Testing
  • ASTM E1255, Standard Practice for Radioscopy
  • ASTM E1411, Standard Practice for Qualification of Radioscopic Systems
  • ASTM E2698, Standard Practice for Radiographic Examination Using Digital Detector Arrays
  • ASTM E2737, Standard Practice for Digital Detector Array Performance Evaluation and Long-Term Suitability
  • ASTM E1742, Standard Practice for Radiographic Examination
  • Requires five (5) years of experience as a NAS410 qualified and certified Level 3 in Radiographic Testing (RT).
  • Requires a minimum of (5) years experience of successful supervision of a group of (5) or more NDT professionals.
  • Requires experience and training to serve as the Radiation Safety Officer.
  • Requires successful completion of visual acuity and color perception testing.
  • Requires current ASNT (or state) Industrial Radiographer Radiation Safety Program (IRRSP) certification.
  • Requires ASNT certification as Level 3 in Radiographic Testing (RT).
  • Requires experience in the aerospace and defense industry.
