Position Type: Administration/Assistant Principal Date Posted: 8/28/2025 Location: New Kent Middle School Position: Middle School Assistant Principal Job Type: Full-time Contract: 260 days; 12 month employee Salary Scale: FLSA Status: Exempt Virtual Risk (COVID-19): Mild Risk In-Person Teaching Risk: Moderate General Definition of Work: Performs professional and administrative work assisting the school principal in the coordination, supervision and management of the school program and operation, and must perform related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the School Principal. Supervision is exercised over all school personnel in the absence of the Middle School Principal. Strong instructional leadership will include the evaluation of instruction interpretation and focused application of student data, demonstrated record of improving student achievement, building an effective schedule, fostering collaboration and faculty teamwork, the ability to develop collaborative problem solvers and include promotion of researched based staff development. Minimum Qualifications: Holds a masters' degree from an accredited college or university; a Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK - 12. Successful experience as a middle school administrator is preferred. Essential Functions: (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed.   • Assists the principal in developing and maintaining an effective educational program consistent with state and federal guidelines and the philosophy, policies and goals of the School Board.
  • Assists the principal in the overall administration of the school; interprets and enforces school system policies and regulations.
  • Serves as principal in the absence of the regular principal.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of the master schedule.
  • Requisitions supplies, textbooks, and equipment; conducts inventories; maintains records; checks on receipts for such materials.
  • Responsible for the development of the school crisis plan, coordination of safety inspections and drills, and associated staff trainings.
  • Assists in the reporting and monitoring of student attendance.
  • Assists in maintaining discipline throughout the student body and deals with special cases as necessary.
  • Serves with parents, faculty and student groups, as requested, in advancing educational and related activities and objectives.
  • Maintains a variety of files; prepares periodic and special reports as required.
  • Identifies the special needs of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of school system specialists as required.
  • Supervises teachers and departments as assigned by the principal.
  • Explains and interprets system-wide curriculum/instructional goals and objectives to teachers, parents, pupils and the community.
  • Assists in the planning and implementation of a systematic method of supervising the instructional program through the use of observations, documentations and follow-up conferences.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the administration and supervision of all facets of a primary, elementary or high school; thorough knowledge of prescribed School Board policies and procedures; ability to communicate complex ideas effectively in both written and oral formats; skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware and peripheral equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, parents, students and the general public. Education and Experience: Holds a masters' degree from an accredited college or university; a Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK - 12. Successful experience as an Assistant Principal is strongly preferred. Special Requirements Possession of appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the ability to operate motor vehicles. Marginal Functions: While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members. Performance Aptitudes Data Utilization: Requires the ability to review, prepare, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data and/or information. Human Interaction: Requires the ability to maintain a cordial and effective relationship with visitors and clients. Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information. Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages as needed; may require ability to utilize principles of fractions and/or interpret graphs as needed. Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution. ADA Compliance Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work at the work site daily, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 25 pounds). Tasks will involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination; Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; Most tasks require oral communications ability. Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, playground, classroom, light traffic).
