JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for the complete day-to-day operations and quality of services offered by Public Health Lab of East Texas (PHLET).
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES / CRITICAL TASKS:
Assists the Responsible Official (RO) to ensure compliance with requirements of the Federal Select
Agent Program including all elements of biosafety, biosecurity, and incident response.
Serves as Alternate Responsible Official, CLIA Technical Supervisor, and prepares laboratory for compliance inspections.
Supports staff in performing complex microbiology test methods, monitor quality control, instrument maintenance and ensures staff compliance with proper policies and procedures.
Develops SOPs, training documents and trains staff in the proper performance of high complexity assays.
Communicates with area Laboratory Response Network regulatory changes and provides training for proper packaging and shipping.
Ensures efficient and effective department operations, properly managing staff and supplies to achieve the highest level of service and quality.
Assists with hands-on demonstrations and teaching of medical students under the leadership of the course director(s) of Invaders and Defense as it pertains to topics relating to the public health laboratory, microbiology, immunology, biosafety, emergency preparedness, local outbreak response and coordination and specific laboratory testing and practices.
Oversees APHL/CDC and other fellows in training as it relates to their laboratory project, which often includes complex molecular and microbiology methodologies.
Prepares and helps lead tours for guests of various types, and ensures individuals receive safety training onsite before the tour.
Assists in preparing information and laboratory space for resident rotations and assists with instruction relating to laboratory specific topics.
Other special topics for specified groups may also be taught at PHLET, with the assistance of the manager, including but not limited to BSL-3 training for students.
Prepares and gathers data for annual budgets.
Actively participates and collaborates with other clinical areas to establish a positive relationship.
Responsible for interviewing, employee selection, personnel action, evaluations and mentoring of personnel.
Responsible for other duties as assigned.
ACCOMPANYING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES:
Ability to operate and maintain standard and high complexity laboratory equipment in a BSL2 and BSL3 environment.
Efficiency in Microsoft Office Products and laboratory reporting systems
Must maintain excellent customer service skills, ability to communicate effectively and exchange information using good judgement.
Ability to work as part of a team with internal and external partners.
Ability to navigate stressful situations and respond accordingly.
