Position Summary: Based in Santa Fe Springs, CA, the Metallurgist position will perform essential job functions associated with heat treatment under the direction of the General Manager to meet customer specifications, including assisting other employees as needed. Develop engineered and practical solutions for the thermal processing of customers' material that are designed to meet specified requirements. Essential Job Functions (Duties & Responsibilities): The primary duties consist of, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Interprets aerospace specifications, including Military, Federal, AMS, and other applicable customer specifications as related to heat treatment, testing, and processing requirements.
  • Reviews incoming purchase orders and parts and confirms that parts are compatible with customer heat treating requirements.
  • Creates process masters, translating customer specifications into specific processing sequences in strict conformance with those requirements.
  • Reviews the shop traveler and receiver for correctness prior to release for processing.
  • Makes necessary customer phone contact to clarify purchase order requirements and provides consultation when failures occur.
  • Reviews laboratory test certifications for acceptance results prior to release for shipment. Responsible for following up on failures and issues rework instructions.
  • Maintains all computer process master files pertaining to heat treating and other applicable processes, updating those as required.
  • Ensure conformance to quality program requirements through external/internal audits, corrective action program, and qualify associates through testing and training.
  • Overseas & maintain AS9100, Nadcap accreditation.
  • Interfaces with inside sales/customer service departments on quotes when required.
  • Assists shop supervisors with proper racking, fixturing, straightening procedures, and tooling design.
  • Responsible for the process development of new parts and technologies.
  • Responsible for process improvements, including productivity, cost reductions, waste elimination, process mapping, and SPC.
  • Responsible for reviewing and commenting on new specifications, including clarification and/or exceptions, and customer follow-up.
  • Functions as a member of the management team, including participating in staff meetings.
  • Must work in a manner consistent with the EMS.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or dictated by position.
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • This position must satisfy ITAR compliance requirements; therefore, candidates must be U.S. Citizens or Permanent Resident cardholders.
  • Education: Must possess extensive metallurgical knowledge with a Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgy or equivalent.
  • Experience: Requires 5 years' experience and practical knowledge of commercial heat treatments of aerospace alloys, including steel, aluminum, titanium, nickel, brass, copper, etc. Familiarity with inspection and laboratory processes is also required.
  • Requires effective communication skills for interfacing with all management levels, shop supervision, and customers.
  • Requires knowledge of the Company's capabilities. Must be thoroughly familiar with commercial, aircraft, aerospace, ASME, and Military specifications.
  • Must be capable of writing general procedures for heat treatment of materials in accordance with customer requirements.
  • Must be capable of making written recommendations for improving the Quality System and Procedures.
  • Must be knowledgeable in fixturing design as it relates to heat treating and straightening.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, be precise, and detail-oriented.
  • Knowledge of computer applications is required.
  • Must have the ability to report for work on time, follow directions, interact effectively with co-workers, understand and follow rules and procedures, and accept constructive criticism.

Physical & Mental Demands: The following physical and mental demands consist of, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Must be able to work in a sitting and/or standing position for extended periods of time in an office/industrial environment
  • Manual dexterity to perform data entry functions
  • Ability to bend, pull, stoop, and reach to perform functions
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.
  • May be exposed to heat, fumes, noise, and humidity, etc.
  • Must have the cognitive and mental capacity to perform essential job functions
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Visual acuity to read documents, computer screens, files, etc.
  • Ability to hear in person and via phone
