Job Title: Mental Health Probation Officer

The Mental Health Probation Officer manages a caseload involving complex cases, including the preparation, monitoring, and assessment of individual treatment plans. Responsibilities include crisis intervention, short-term individual and group counseling, and making referrals based on evidence-based practices. The officer provides supervision and sanctions for defendants/offenders with mental health diagnoses under pretrial or probation supervision, supporting their rehabilitation through treatment, education, counseling, mentoring, conflict resolution, and community resource referrals.

The role aims to assist adult defendants/offenders in leading law-abiding lives, improving treatment compliance, reducing incarceration, and enhancing public safety. The officer presents cases in court, participates in team meetings, and collaborates with the Commonwealth Attorney, Defense Attorney, and Treatment Providers to ensure continuity of care. They also help clients maintain compliance with court orders and may be called upon for 24-hour emergency response.

  • Conduct risk assessments and develop treatment plans;
  • Meet with clients to monitor living situations, behavior, and compliance;
  • Provide supportive services like crisis intervention and counseling;
  • Consider sanctions or rewards for pro-social behavior in collaboration with team members;
  • Maintain detailed records of client contacts;
  • Update data in the PTCC Case Management System;
  • Submit reports according to DCJS guidelines;
  • Prepare court correspondence and reports on client compliance;
  • Attend court, testify as needed, and notify clients of court dates;
  • Coordinate with community agencies and monitor payment plans;
  • Assist in developing treatment groups and serve as liaison with service providers;
  • Facilitate motivational treatment groups;
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and community stakeholder meetings;
  • Attend relevant training and conferences;
  • Maintain statistical and administrative reports;
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Thorough knowledge of sociology and psychology principles related to adult counseling, court procedures, case management, and client supervision. Skills in motivational interviewing, client motivation, and effective communication in stressful situations. Strong problem-solving, time management, writing, oral communication, decision-making, and computer skills. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Four-year degree in psychology or related field, one year of experience with criminal justice, substance abuse, or mental health populations, or equivalent experience and training. Meets Qualified Mental Health Professional criteria. Valid driver's license required.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Postgraduate courses in mental health and the judicial system, psychology, counseling, or related fields; two years of case management experience in criminal justice and mental health systems; bilingual in English and Spanish.
