Mental Health Probation Officer - City of Alexandria Virginia : Job Details

The Mental Health Probation Officer carries a caseload involving complex cases, including preparation, monitoring, and assessment of treatment plans. Responsibilities include crisis intervention, short-term individual and group counseling, and making referrals using evidence-based practices. The officer provides supervision and sanctions for defendants/offenders with mental health diagnoses under pretrial or probation supervision. They assist in client rehabilitation through treatment, supervision, education, counseling, mentoring, conflict resolution, and community resource referrals. The goal is to help adult defendants/offenders lead law-abiding lives, improve treatment compliance, reduce incarceration, and enhance public safety. The officer presents cases in court, team meetings, and collaborates with legal and treatment professionals to ensure continuity of care. They also assist clients in maintaining compliance with court orders. The role requires authority under the Virginia Code and supervision by the Alexandria Criminal Justice Services Director, with availability for emergencies or crises.

Thorough knowledge of sociology and psychology principles related to adult counseling; court procedures and laws; case management and client supervision practices; motivational interviewing; pretrial and probation techniques; correctional procedures; and the criminal justice system. Skills include motivating clients, effective communication under stress, problem-solving, time management, writing, decision-making, and computer proficiency. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Four-year degree in psychology or related field; one year experience with criminal justice, substance abuse, or mental health populations; or equivalent experience and training. Meets Qualified Mental Health Professional criteria; valid drivers license required.

Postgraduate courses in mental health and the judicial system, psychology, or counseling; two years case management experience with criminal justice and mental health clients; bilingual in English and Spanish.
