Job Description :

1. Supports the Department of Medicine by assisting with patient medication management.

2. Receives, reviews, and facilitates requests for medication renewal. Reviews requests according to guidelines, pends them in the electronic medical record (Epic), and routes to prescriber for review and signature.

3. Acts as an agent of the provider to transmit prescription information to pharmacies by phone, fax, or paper when electronic prescribing is unavailable.

4. Serves as a resource for patients regarding procedures for obtaining prescriptions, generic medications, prior approval requirements, insurance procedures, and other medication-related issues.

5. Completes medication prior authorization paperwork for signoff by the clinical care team. Monitors the progress of prior authorization status and updates relevant parties as necessary.

6. Answers phones, provides information, and directs calls appropriately.

7. Assists in department-wide initiatives for improved medication prescribing, such as preferred medications, recalls, alerts, and formulation changes.

8. Performs all functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, hospital policies, and procedures.

9. Handles confidential information in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.

10. Attends team meetings, contributes positively, and focuses on quality improvement.

11. Maintains a clean and organized work environment.

12. Adheres to institutional and departmental policies and procedures.

13. Demonstrates accountability and ownership of responsibilities.

14. Exhibits professional behavior in communication, punctuality, attire, internet and phone use, and teamwork.

15. Performs additional duties as needed.

Skill Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 18 years old.
  • Completion of an accredited or Board-certified Pharmacy Technician or Medical Assistant training program, or equivalent experience.
  • One-year experience in a medical setting; pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, patient confidentiality, medication abbreviations, indications, dosages, and medical terminology.
  • Experience with electronic medical records and Outlook; Epic experience preferred.
  • Strong communication skills in English; bilingual (Spanish) a plus.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, protect confidentiality, and demonstrate courtesy and respect.
  • Skills in service excellence, active listening, problem-solving, and remaining calm.
  • Good judgment, attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
