Overview

Medical Science Liaison - Neuroscience - San Francisco - Remote is a field-based, customer-facing, non-promotional medical and scientific role. The MSL's objective is to advance clinical practice within the assigned territory to improve patient outcomes. The MSL demonstrates deep therapeutic expertise, understands territory and market influences, engages scientifically with Healthcare Providers (HCPs) and medical experts, manages and develops their territory, and executes all activities in alignment with the medical strategic and tactical plan, while operating within the Novartis Code of Conduct and Ethics/Compliance policies. The MSL informs and shapes medical strategy by gathering impactful insights and identifying their potential strategic impact.

This territory covers the San Francisco Area. Must live within 50 miles of the territory border to be considered. Relocation is not available.

Responsibilities
  • The MSL will leverage scientific expertise and market knowledge to establish and build professional relationships and engage with HCPs (including community physicians, pharmacists, medical experts, nurses, and other healthcare professionals) and other thought leaders in the geographic area as aligned with the medical strategy.
  • The primary responsibility is to engage with customers through emerging data discussions, clinical trial activities, uncovering barriers in the patient journey, understanding market dynamics within the territory, exploring unmet medical needs, pipeline discussions, educating on disease state and product, capturing adverse events, and capturing medical insights through all stages of the product lifecycle.
  • Demonstrate strategic territory vision and ensure appropriate territory identification, mapping, and planning of Medical Engagements and Key Accounts aligned to medical strategy, in collaboration with internal Novartis colleagues.
  • Identify key stakeholders influencing the patient journey and disease space across the product development lifecycle to establish education, engagement, and partnership strategies; identify opportunities for partnerships with academic centers, centers of excellence, and systems of care to drive impact; identify opportunities to involve HCPs or MEs when a medical need is identified (e.g., publications, clinical trial participation).
  • Identify opportunities for internal collaboration with other Novartis stakeholders to advance therapeutic area, clinical, or product goals as appropriate.
  • Provide clinical trial support for company-sponsored trials, facilitating relevant medical activities and working cross-functionally with Medical Affairs and Clinical Operations colleagues.
  • Collaborate with internal colleagues (e.g., HEOR, access, marketing, commercial, sales) to advance clinical practice while maintaining customer centricity and a One Novartis approach in compliance with policies.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of the assigned therapeutic area and Novartis compounds to serve as a medical resource to customers and internal colleagues, in accordance with Working Practice Documents.
  • Maintain knowledge of internal policies and external regulations (e.g., field medical Working Practice Document, travel policy, expense policy, local laws, institutional policies) and how they affect day-to-day responsibilities.
  • Execute administrative responsibilities and training (e.g., Veeva CRM, voicemail, e-mail, expense reports, compliance modules) in a timely manner, including profiling core customers and ensuring up-to-date information in the CRM.
  • Champion emerging responsibilities as strategic priorities and territory needs evolve; proactively drive personal and professional development.
Qualifications
  • Education: Graduate degree in science or healthcare required; doctoral degree preferred (MD, PhD, DNP, PharmD, etc).
  • Experience for Manager Level: 0-3 years of Field Medical experience or MSL experience is required; 3-5 years in medical affairs or clinical research in a scientific or clinical setting is preferred.
  • Experience for AD Level: Minimum of 3 years in Field Medical or MSL role preferred; 5-7 years in medical affairs or clinical research in a scientific or clinical setting required. Previous experience in the therapeutic area is preferred.
  • Experience All Levels: Strong clinical knowledge including pharmacotherapy, treatment guidelines, clinical research processes, medical expert engagement strategies, and FDA promotional guidelines and ethical standards for the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to comply with applicable laws, regulations, and Novartis policies; adherence to ethics and promotional policies.
  • Willingness to work in a field-based role (San Francisco Area). Residence within territory or within a 50-mile commuting distance is required.
  • Working hours and travel expectations will be defined by the hiring manager. Expected travel approximately 60-70% of the time (in-person, virtual, phone, etc.).
Compensation and Benefits

The pay range at commencement is expected to be between: for Manager 166,400 - 249,600 and for AD 183,200 - 274,800 per year. Salary ranges are effective from 1/1/25 through 12/31/25; actual pay may vary based on location, experience, and other factors. The total compensation package may include a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, discretionary awards, and a full range of benefits (including 401(k) and paid time off). If hired, the role is at-will and the company reserves the right to modify base salary and other compensation programs at any time.
