Responsibilities and Duties:
- Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned including checking schedules and organizing patient flow; accompanying patients to exam rooms; assisting patients as needed with walking transfers, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.; collecting patient history; performing screenings per provider guidelines; charting; relaying instructions to patients/families; answering calls, and providing pertinent information.
- Complete clerical responsibilities as assigned that may include sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/X-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms/requisitions as needed; scheduling appointments; verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics; managing and updating charts to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriately.
- Meets environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocols; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; and restocking exam/procedure rooms.
- Complete organizational responsibilities as assigned including respecting/promoting patient rights; responding appropriately to emergency codes; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisor.
- Fulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities, which include checking vital signs; physical examination preparations; prescription verifications with physician's orders; biohazard waste disposal and monitoring; laboratory procedures including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines; quality control methods; CLIA-waived testing; venipunctures; specimen handling such as urine, throat, vaginal, stool, and sputum; EKG testing; completing lab draws; emergency first aid.
- Work as part of a team along with Physicians, APPs, Licensed Nurses, Receptionists and all other staff.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times. HIPAA Compliant.
- Preparing patients before drawing blood
- Explaining blood draw procedures to patients and answering any questions about the process
- Following all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas
- Gathering medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags and test tubes
- Verifying patient information and labeling blood samples properly
- Accurately updating patient information in the organization's database
- Helping nervous or frightened patients remain calm during blood draws
- Complies with organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
*Medical assistants must adhere to the MA scope of practice in the laboratory and practice based on NYS guidelines.Job Requirements:
- Candidates must have minimum H.S. diploma or GED; excellent interpersonal skills and customer service attitude
- Preferred: experience working as a MOA or MA and/or certified as a Medical Assistant or CAN in an outpatient office setting
- Phlebotomy Certification preferred
