Job Description: MEDICAL ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION Qualifications: Certified Medical Assistant (current certification) and ability to do the following: Systems Management:

  • Demonstrates knowledge and appropriate use of ONCO EMR:
  • Ability to navigate patient flowsheet and identify name of injection regimen, specific regimen information (dosing parameters, scheduling, emetic potential and references), Cycle/Day numbers, review previous treatment doses and move orders accordingly
  • Ability to schedule follow up appointments and print schedules.
  • Ability to record vitals, review medication list and verify smoking status
  • Ability to fax documents, print demographics, office notes, lab reports and insurance cards.
  • Ability to review patient medication list and send patient prescriptions to designated pharmacy.
  • Understanding of the importance of correct diagnosis code ICD-9 and where to find this in the chart.
Completes Injection Administration Competency Record
  • Demonstrates adherence to OSHA requirements
  • Demonstrates the ability to remove the injections from vital path machine
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the indication for use of individual injection drugs
  • Demonstrates knowledge of individual injections side effects, toxicities, reports complications to RN as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of safe handling and administration of injections.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of parameters to treat with l lab values, vitals and proper diagnosis (ICD 10 code)
Injections:
  • Demonstrates appropriate technique when administrating subcutaneous, intramuscular injections and skin tests intradermal.
  • Verbalizes knowledge of and indication for use of commonly administered injections including; Procrit, Aranesp, Neupogen, Neulasta, Sandostatin, Faslodex, Lupron, B12, Hepatitis B, Flu vaccine, Pneumococcal and Tuberculin
  • Documents appropriately in ONCO EMR
  • Patient and family teaching as appropriate
Department Process and Patient Flow:
  • Checks daily schedule for responsibilities.
  • Prepares exam rooms for the day
  • Manages physicians and injection schedule efficiently.
  • Works effectively and efficiently. Identifies when to assist patients and colleagues.
  • Ability to recognize change in patient condition and alert appropriate personnel.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently with physicians and staff members from other departments.
  • Demonstrates appropriate technique when assisting with bone marrow procedure.
  • Translate, in Spanish on behalf of the oncology department and physician patients (bilingual Mas)
  • Provide 2nd MA check of injections as required
  • Ability to identify patients who require a gown prior to physician entering the room
  • Manages voice mail efficiently and forwards messages appropriately
  • Ability to discharge patient on a timely manner
Non-emergency calls to 911 and direct admissions to hospital under the direction of the physician:
  • Ability to call 911 and provides information efficiently
  • Ability to print patient information efficiently and provide documentation for ambulance personnel
  • Prepares patient for transfer via ambulance or by car with family member
  • Ability to contact nursing supervisor at local hospital to efficiently arrange for direct admission
Assist RN with telephone triage:
  • Taking messages from answering machine in complete and accurate
  • Notifies RN or physician of emergency calls
  • Ability to send non urgent messages, text notes to appropriate personal
PROCEDURE:
  • Prepares for bone marrow procedure, patient family education, documentation
LAB Coverage:
  • Demonstrates adherence to OSHA requirements
  • Demonstrates knowledge of drawing blood in efficient manner
  • Demonstrates knowledge of safe handling specimen
  • Demonstrates knowledge of processing specimen efficiently
  • Demonstrates knowledge of completing paper work
PHYSICAL FACTORS: The physical abilities required of this position may include the following:
  • Vision sufficient to read handwritten, typed and computer documents throughout the shift
  • Speech and hearing sufficient to receive and communicate detailed information clearly by phone and in person
  • Motor skills sufficient to handle, use or operate computer terminal, fax machine, copier, telephone, needles, IV,
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to use a variety of hand held tools and to manipulate single sheets of paper and/or file materials
  • Physical ability to reach, lift, and bend to retrieve and/or file materials
  • Physical ability to sit, stand or otherwise remain stationary at work post for long periods of time
  • Physical ability to lift and carry 20 lbs.
  • Physical ability to walk up and down one flight of stairs and between patient and departments throughout the day.
Salary Range: $21.00 - $30.24
