The Mechanical Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle, invites outstanding candidates to apply for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. This position is on a 9-month service period with an anticipated start date of Sept 16, 2024. This position is aimed at recruiting an exceptional candidate in the field of physics-based Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence. The UW Mechanical Engineering Department has achieved international prominence in the use of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in the modeling and control of physical systems. The candidate will join a world-class group of scientists and engineers in ME, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, etc., highlighted by the recent AI Institute in Dynamic Systems funded with $20M by NSF and with multiple academic and industrial partners.

The ME Department at the University of Washington seeks to build on its existing strengths in machine learning and, more generally, in data-driven modeling and control of complex engineering systems. Candidates with a strong background in this area are encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will be expected to develop an internationally recognized, extramurally funded research program with direct impacts on both academia and industry. The candidate will also be expected to provide innovative, high-quality teaching in ME's Bachelors, Master's, and PhD programs, to mentor and educate graduate students, and to contribute to an inclusive and equitable campus.

The UW Mechanical Engineering Department has achieved international prominence in Engineering Sciences applied to Medicine. ME@UW is in a significant and sustained growth period and seeks to build on existing strengths while expanding its impact. We want to emphasize that the individual's excellence in research, as clearly identified by a record of publication in archival journals and presentations at top international conferences, is more important than the specific area of sub-specialization.

The base salary range for this position will be $11,111-$17,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD or other foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. The successful applicant will be expected to provide innovative, high-quality teaching; to develop a vigorous, externally-funded research program; and to contribute to the goals and missions of the department, college, and university.
