Salary : $73,174.40 - $82,388.80 Annually Location : City of Pasco, WA Job Type: Regular Full-Time Job Number: 2730.418.03 Department: Public Works Division: PW Operations Opening Date: 08/14/2025 Closing Date: 8/29/2025 7:00 AM Pacific FLSA: Non-Exempt SUMMARY OF POSITION Performs skilled mechanical tasks in the diagnosis of malfunctions, preventative maintenance, repairs, modifications, and overhaul of diesel and gasoline-powered City vehicles and equipment. Responsible for maintaining vehicles and equipment in a safe and operating condition. Produces quality workmanship when completing maintenance tasks and completes them in a safe and timely manner. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Additional job functions may vary due to department or City needs/requirements. Assignments may include but are not limited to:
  • Performs general preventative maintenance, diagnostic, and repair work on trucks, tractors, cars, graders, backhoes, mowers, and related types of equipment and vehicles.
  • Services vehicles with oil, changes filters, lubricates, adjusts brakes, checks air and water, replaces hoses and tires, and performs other servicing and tune-up procedures.
  • Operates standard shop equipment and hand tools in the maintenance and repair of vehicles.
  • Assures that work is accomplished in accordance with established safety practices.
  • Diagnoses mechanical problems using electronic and mechanical test equipment and estimates materials and timelines for repair and activities.
  • Repairs gasoline or diesel engines by removing defective parts and fitting replacement parts.
  • Replaces or rebuilds equipment based upon the cost and quality of equipment operation considerations.
  • Welds and fabricates parts as needed and modifies equipment as necessary to accomplish repairs.
  • Inspects, adjusts, and replaces components and related apparatuses of the electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, fuel exhaust, cooling and other systems.
  • Inspects, repairs, and reassembles air compressors, pumps, and related equipment.
  • Repairs, rebuilds and installs hydraulic pumps, cylinders, and controls.
  • Repairs air and hydraulic brakes and other specialized equipment.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Drives to site to perform repairs on vehicles and equipment.
  • Test drives automobiles and equipment to determine repairs needed.
  • Assists Chief Mechanic in establishing and maintaining a parts inventory; procuring oils, greases, antifreeze, shop supplies to support shop operations; writing requisitions and purchasing parts as needed for vehicle repairs.
  • Maintains repair records of all services performed, fills out work orders, tracks repair parts used and time spent.
  • Cleans and maintains City vehicle repair shop.
  • Maintains shop tools in safe working condition.
  • Interacts with employees from various departments to answer questions about equipment and to schedule equipment into the shop for inspection and repair.
  • Answers phone and takes messages as needed in absence of clerical staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE - Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Two (2) years of training in automotive technology.
  • Four (4) years of mechanical repair experience with gasoline or diesel equipment.
  • Completion of trade school and Automotive Service Excellence mechanical certification preferable.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS - Certain licenses and certificates, if required, may be acquired on the job as agreed upon by the City and employee. Subject to change based on operational needs.
  • Valid Washington State driver license.
  • CDL Class B and air brake endorsements.
  • First Aid/ CPR certification
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Duties are primarily performed in the vehicle maintenance shop and duties may require traveling to emergency sites to assure equipment operation. ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed inside a shop area; repairs are made in the field when necessary; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke fumes and gases. PHYSICAL: Work requires mobility and agility to perform manual labor repairs in cramp conditions. Frequently lifts heavy materials, parts, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds VISION: Visual acuity to diagnose and perform mechanical repairs. HAZARDS: Risk physical hazards from mechanical and electrical equipment.
