Job Description

Career Development in the Kogod School of Business at American University provides career support to undergraduate and graduate business students. MBA Consultants are pivotal in representing the office to students, employers, prospective students, faculty members, and staff, as well as providing important communication regarding events and professionalism to peers. MBA Consultants will support students with resume reviews and help educate classmates on the resources available to them through the office. These positions are paid, and hiring preference is given to students who have strong professional experience in addition to experience developing and growing a social media presence.

Responsibilities

1.) Student Appointments

  • Meet with master's and MBA students during drop-in hours to provide feedback on resumes and make appropriate referrals to resources and coaching.
  • Conduct drop-in hours and record information in the Kogod Talent Network.
  • Assist students with scheduling appointments with the Career Coaches.

2.) Peer-to-Peer Communication

  • Develop MBA and master's specific social media content and post in relevant networks.
  • Further Career Development communication with course faculty regarding upcoming events and services by requesting time to make announcements in class.
  • Advertise Kogod Talent Network among MBA peers and fellow graduate students.

3.) Confidentiality

  • Commit to preserving confidential information on students, employers, faculty, and staff while working in Career Development.

4.) Other Duties

  • Consulting on career education and programming as needed.
  • Manage projects and tasks with Career Development staff members. Projects will be structured to relate to individual career interests as available.
  • Handling the office's front desk phone and general email account, answering, and directing calls and general emails from employers, students, and prospective students, including answering general questions callers and visitors have about the Career Development and Kogod.
  • Providing a high level of customer service to all visitors (students, employers, faculty, and staff).
  • Becoming knowledgeable with Kogod Talent Network and providing troubleshooting support for employers and students with technical issues.
  • Perform general office administrative duties, such as data entry, faxing, copying, stocking shared space, etc.
Position Type/Expected Hours Of Work
  • Part-Time.
  • 5 hours per week.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work if needed.
Salary Range
  • $20.00 per hour.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • First-year and second-year MBA students.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills to include being professionally savvy and navigating employment conversations.
  • Exceptional written communication skills including editing/reviewing documents and providing feedback to peers.
  • Applicants should possess a strong interest in developing knowledge of career-related topics.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Project management experience a plus.
  • Initiative and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Maturity and an elevated level of professionalism, especially as it relates to peer feedback, social media campaigns, and interacting with employers, faculty, and staff.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Receive cross-training in front desk operations, event logistics, and social media support.
  • Assist with setting up and tearing down events, including lifting up to 25 lbs as needed.
  • Attend a mandatory two-day training session in late August (exact dates to be confirmed).
  • Sign and comply with a confidentiality agreement to protect student records and sensitive information.
  • Cover Letter highly recommended.
