The opportunity:Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company is seeking qualified engineers to join our marine fleet. We are hiring for multiple levels of licensed engineers across our Hopper and Cutter Suction Dredge fleets. Acting as vessel officers and key members of the engineering department, these positions are responsible for the safe, reliable operation of all vessel machinery, systems, and equipment. Great Lakes owns and operates the largest and most diverse fleet in the U.S. dredging industry, comprised of approximately 200 specialized vessels. Great Lakes has a disciplined training program for engineers that ensures experienced-based performance as they advance through Company operations. Responsibilities and Functions Include: Effectively manage and supervise engine room staff and partner with the Captain to ensure safe vessel operations. Oversee day-to-day operations and maintenance of all mechanical and electrical equipment on board the vessel, including diesel engines, propulsion systems, DP systems, pumps, winches, hydraulic systems, refrigeration, electrical, hotel systems, and pollution prevention equipment defined in MARPOL. Maintain safe work environments by leading daily pre-shift meetings, Job Safety Analyses (JSA), safety walk-throughs, and promoting proactive safety reporting (Good Catch, Near Miss, etc.). Conduct required emergency drills, maintain accurate engine room logs, oil record books, and ensure vessels meet all regulatory requirements (ISM, USCG, ABS). Troubleshoot and repair shipboard equipment; utilize technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic tools. Oversee and manage vendor repair crews during shipyard and maintenance activities. Coordinate vessel maintenance and reliability activities with Captains, Project Managers, and Maintenance leadership. Ensure vessel condition monitoring, preventative maintenance tasks, and spare part inventories are properly managed. Mentor junior engineers and promote safety awareness, continuous improvement, and professional development. Requirements (Vary by Role): We are hiring for multiple levels of licensed engineers. Candidates must hold a valid TWIC card and meet at least one of the following license/credential requirements: Chief Engineer - Unlimited Horsepower USCG Chief Engineer of Unlimited Horsepower with no restrictions. Experience managing engine room staff, leading maintenance programs, and regulatory inspections. Preferred training: Caterpillar & EMD engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, rigging, and lifting. Dredging experience preferred. Hydraulic Chief Engineer (Cutter Suction Dredge) Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering or technical discipline, or equivalent industry experience. Strong knowledge of diesel engines, propulsion systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, compressed air, fuel oil, and lube oil systems. Experience with ABS and USCG regulations, ISM procedures, and Maintenance Operating Systems (MOS). Preferred: USCG Chief Engineer License, Tankerman PIC, training in Caterpillar & EMD engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems. Ability to lead pre-shift meetings, emergency drills, and shipyard/maintenance coordination. First Assistant Engineer - Unlimited Horsepower USCG First Assistant Engineer (Motor Vessels of Unlimited Horsepower). Minimum 12 months of offshore DP vessel experience (24 months preferred, including 6 months as 1st A/E). Strong background in propulsion, DP systems, marine systems, and safety leadership. 3rd Assistant Engineer (3rd Assistant or Higher) USCG license for 3rd Assistant Engineer of Unlimited Horsepower or higher. Skilled in troubleshooting, repair, and operation of shipboard equipment. Ability to maintain logs, conduct inspections, and support Chief/1st Engineers as needed. Welding skills and knowledge of marine fuel systems preferred. Additional Requirements (All Roles) Valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC). Valid medical certificate. Valid U.S. Passport (preferred). Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities. Excellent communication and leadership skills. Commitment to safety, reliability, and continuous improvement.
