Merced College is seeking a collaborative and sustainability-minded Manager, Operations to oversee custodial and grounds services across all district sites. This leadership role requires strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, external partners, and community members. The successful candidate will be responsible for daily operations, staff supervision, and implementing environmentally sustainable practices, including water conservation, waste diversion, and landscape management. This position plays a key role in supporting campus facilities through strategic planning, program analysis, and resource allocation. Proficiency with technology-based systems such as computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and sustainability tracking tools is highly desirable. Current focus areas include campus-wide sustainability initiatives, program and staffing assessments, and infrastructure improvements in alignment with institutional goals.

This is a classified administrator position. Under the general direction of the Director, Maintenance, Events and Transportation, the Manager, Operations position is responsible for upkeep of college buildings and grounds, and implementing District-wide sustainability practices. In addition, the incumbent assists with special projects and activities related to grounds and custodial operations as needed.

Representative Duties :

• Under the direction of the Director, Maintenance, Events and Transportation, plans, directs, and supervises custodial services; and grounds, including landscaping layout and maintenance
• Supervise, lead, and evaluate the work of designated District staff
• Manage and supervise the daily workflow of departmental employees, ensuring the completion of daily tasks as assigned; effective deploy of staff to accomplish daily functions as needed
• Effective forecasting, planning and feasibility analysis, budget development and control, and analytical and accountability analysis
• Ensure staff are trained in work and safety procedures in the operation and use of assignment related supplies and equipment
• Interpret drawings, diagrams, specifications, and construction documents
• Prepare and present departmental reports
• Assist in the development of contracts and agreements for the District
• Respond to emergencies in off-hours as necessary
• Serve as a member on various college committees and teams
• Lead and coordinate campus-wide sustainability programs related to waste reduction, composting/food waste management, water irrigation and landscaping
• Develop and monitor recycling, waste diversion, and carbon sequestration initiatives in coordination with custodial and grounds staff
• Track and report sustainability metrics aligned with institutional goals and state mandates
• Other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:

• Principles and practices relating to grounds and custodial
• Applicable Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations
• Budgetary and administrative principles and practices
• Appropriate methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial and grounds
• Sustainable facilities practices including low-water landscaping, waste stream diversion and composting in institutional environments
• Computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite and other job-related software
• Current technologies, trends, and changes in industries related to assigned departmental functions

Ability to:

• Interpret and apply District policies and procedures
• Supervise, train, and direct the work of others
• Utilize a computer and related software applications
• Interpret applicable Federal, State, and local codes, laws and regulations including applicable sections of the California Education Code
• Participate in the development and administration of goals, objectives of the District
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
• Exercise sound independent judgment
• Establish and maintain effective working relations with those contacted in the course of work
• Consistently and effectively perform under the pressure of deadlines and other administrative demands
• Analyze problems, evaluate alternatives, and make creative recommendations
• Develop and implement environmentally sustainable practices that align with institutional strategic goals
• Track and report sustainability data using software tools and reporting templates
• Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students

Minimum Qualifications:

• Associate's degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a related field AND two (2) years of management experience OR

• Any combination of applicable work experience (i.e. project management) with at least five (5) years of management-level experience

License or Certificate:A valid California Class “C” driver's license. Travel to locations throughout the District may be required

Desired Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a related field

• Experience with grounds and custodial

• Experience in implementing sustainability initiatives such as water conservation, recycling programs, and green procurement

• Knowledge of CalRecycle guidelines and environmental reporting frameworks
