The Economic Development and Culture (EDC) Division at the City of Toronto works to advance Toronto's prosperity, opportunity, and liveability by fostering employment and investment opportunities, encouraging cultural vibrancy through enhanced cultural experiences, and engaging partners in planning and developing economic and cultural resources.

EDC's Museum & Heritage Services section operates 10 historic sites, including Toronto's Fort York National Historic Site and Spadina Museum. As Manager, Museums, you will provide strategic leadership, oversee the city's museum facilities, and work closely with the management team to support visitor experience, operations, programming, capital planning, and curatorial development. Your goal will be to ensure divisional priorities are met and diverse stories are shared through programming at these sites.

Reporting to the Director, Museums & Heritage Services, your responsibilities include planning annual work programs, developing revenue-generating initiatives (grants, sponsorships, fees), managing the budget, and ensuring expenditures stay within limits. You will oversee programs at various historic sites, ensuring they meet standards and are innovative and adaptable to changing needs.

Major Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement plans and policies for specific programs.
• Manage, motivate, and train staff, ensuring high performance and continuous improvement.
• Oversee daily operations, staff scheduling, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions.
• Administer the annual budget, monitor expenditures, and adjust programs for revenue targets.
• Develop revenue initiatives and implement them within city guidelines.
• Foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
• Build relationships with external partners, City divisions, and Councillors to develop partnerships and support.
• Ensure excellent customer service for internal and external clients.
• Manage RFP processes, evaluate proposals, and oversee contracts.
• Develop project plans, coordinate with partners, and secure resources.
• Recommend capital needs and develop operational standards and strategies.
• Provide oversight to ensure museums meet accreditation standards and best practices.
• Review and improve museum operations, programming, hours, and staffing.
• Coordinate cross-site programming and marketing strategies.
• Manage gift shop operations and ensure financial handling is proper.
• Maintain documentation, Statements of Significance, and Designation reports.
• Develop Interpretive Plans and oversee restoration projects.
• Plan long-term site development and capital projects.
• Lead community engagement, consultations, and stakeholder relations.
• Prepare reports for City Council and represent the City on major projects.

Key Qualifications

Among your strengths should be:

• Post-secondary education or equivalent experience.
• Extensive experience in visitor engagement and managing guest relations.
• Experience in budget management, including variance analysis and forecasting.
• Leadership experience managing diverse teams and complex programs.
• Proven ability in program development, stakeholder management, and strategic planning.

You should also possess excellent interpersonal, negotiation skills, and knowledge of relevant legislation. Familiarity with MS Office 365 is essential. Lived experience with justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, especially as a member of an Indigenous, Black, or equity-deserving group, is an asset, supporting the City's values of equity and respectful workplaces.
