Overview

This position manages system and web development, support resources, DBA resources during coverage, and involves hands-on technical work, project leadership, and problem resolution. It oversees staff, supported systems, environments, and vendor coordination within the Development, Systems & Support unit of Enterprise Applications & Services [EAS]. The role requires maintaining technical and procedural competence in a high-paced, collaborative environment that handles emergency outages and scheduled maintenance.

If you are an experienced software/systems engineer with leadership skills, this role offers a pathway into engineering management. Work may involve team projects or independent tasks across multiple locations, sometimes requiring irregular hours or on-call support.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Management: Lead and manage all unit aspects including staff, applications, systems, vendors, projects, coding, change management, issue resolution, goal setting, research, quality control, and scheduling. Develop understanding of supported systems and services. Lead meetings, supervise staff, assign work, and create training programs.
  • Operations: Monitor systems, troubleshoot problems, oversee incident resolution, evaluate system performance, and oversee SDLC activities from specifications to launch.
  • System & Process Improvement: Manage automation initiatives, ensure compliance with coding standards, collaborate on industry trends, and set technical direction. Review and recommend system updates and workflows. Track progress and document best practices.
  • Environment & Maintenance: Oversee existing environments, implement new technologies, analyze performance, manage risks, and coordinate patches and upgrades. Maintain technical competence.
  • Client Support: Provide daily technical support and project work, liaise with departments, vendors, and SUNY.
  • Documentation: Generate reports, oversee guides, and document SDLC/code for current and future technologies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or related field.
  • 5-7 years of experience leading application development, preferably in higher education, using current technologies, web frameworks, and APIs.

Knowledge & Skills

Significant knowledge of ERP systems (preferably Ellucian Banner, Central Square), operational and project management principles, database technologies (Oracle, SQL Server), and web development (PL/SQL, Java, Groovy/Grails, API development). Strong leadership, communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills are essential. Ability to work under tight deadlines, manage multiple projects, and oversee technical staff is required.

Additional Information

Employment is contingent upon background check. Salary ranges from $98,510.61 to $142,342.15 annually, commensurate with experience. Benefits include retirement plans, health care, paid time off, and more. The position is full-time, days/hours M-F, 9am-5pm, on campus. FIT is committed to diversity and equal opportunity employment.
