The Opportunity

  • Be responsible for supporting recoveries on scheduled call days.
  • Coordinate and arrange all transportation logistics, including securing air and ground transport for recovery teams, ensuring seamless travel to and from airports and hospitals to support efficient and timely organ recovery operations.
  • Be available on-demand to respond to time-sensitive organ recovery needs, often working during nights, weekends, or holidays.
  • Quickly adapt to dynamic and urgent situations to ensure the successful recovery and preservation of organs.
  • Ensure full compliance with all applicable state, federal, and local laws, as well as organizational policies and regulatory requirements, upholding the highest standards of legal and ethical practice.
  • Responsible for supporting the recovery of donor organs in keeping with the policies, rules, and regulations of Vituity clients and its medical and surgical staff.
  • Assess organ viability in high-pressure situations, often within narrow timeframes, to determine whether organs are suitable for transplantation.
  • Facilitate communication from transplant center and oversee the allocation and coordination of cases with appropriate team members to ensure seamless operations.
  • Communicate in real time with transplant surgeons and recipient hospitals to coordinate operating room schedules and readiness.
  • Oversee the logistics plan of organ procurement organizations (OPOs) to evaluate donor eligibility and medical suitability.
  • Identify and address potential logistical, surgical, or administrative risks that could delay recovery or transplant, ensuring no critical time is lost.
  • Notify all pertinent stakeholders upon the acceptance of the organ, ensuring timely communication of critical information, including cross-clamp time, to facilitate seamless coordination and preparation across teams.
  • Manage communication between the donor's healthcare team and the transplant team regarding medical assessments and procedures.
  • Manage the logistics of the organ recovery process, including scheduling operating room times and coordinating with surgical teams.
  • Guarantee compliance with protocols for organ recovery, preservation, and transportation.
  • Ensure that organs are allocated to transplant centers according to United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) policies. Misallocation or delays could result in organ loss and patient death.
  • Serve as the primary point of accountability for maintaining the chain of custody during organ transplant.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact between transplant centers, OPOs, and recovery teams.
  • Provide regular updates to transplant surgeons and OPO staff on the progress of the organ recovery process.
  • Drive collaboration with external resources to develop and promote practices that increase the number of organs recovered for transplantation.
  • Serve as the clinical subject matter expert internally and externally aimed at increasing organ recovery outcomes.
  • Interpret and apply clinical guidelines for organ recovery and transplantation.
  • Coordinate the allocation of recovered organs according to United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) guidelines.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of the organ recovery process, including donor medical history, organ assessments, and transport details.
  • Ensure adherence to all ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements, including those established by UNOS/OPTN and hospital policies.
  • Manage the collaboration with the Vituity Quality and Operations team members to develop best practice protocols.
  • Responsible for working in collaboration with the Surgical Recovery Specialists to train and evaluate new staff.
  • Submit required case documentation to OPTN, UNOS, and the OPO.
  • Contribute to the development of best practices and protocols for organ procurement, appropriate clinical monitoring intervals for transplant patients, application of new anti-rejection drugs, implementation of Care Delivery Systems.

Required Experience and Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in Allied Health or related field, or a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the attainment of the required competencies required.
  • One (1) year of OPO or transplantation experience required.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment required.
  • Ability to receive calls from transplant centers and coordinating the case.
  • Broad knowledge of modern health care administration, practices, and principles.
  • Must be well-versed in medical terminology related to organ transplantation.
  • Proficient in understanding and communicating complex medical and clinical information to healthcare professionals, including surgical teams, intensivists, and transplant centers, ensuring the accuracy of documentation and adherence to regulatory standards.
  • Demonstrated expertise in organ recovery protocols, including assessment, preservation, and transportation.
  • Proven ability to oversee and direct clinical operations and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to assess organ viability under high-pressure situations, leveraging advanced medical and technical knowledge.
  • Demonstratable experience on working with transplant surgeons, OPO staff, and hospital teams to achieve seamless coordination.
  • Flexibility to respond to unpredictable schedules and on-call duties.
  • Strong decision-making skills, particularly in time-sensitive and high-stakes situations.
  • Commitment to upholding organizational policies and protocols.
  • Excellent ability to work as a liaison between transplant surgeons, organ procurement organizations (OPOs), and other healthcare professionals.
  • Skilled in fostering a collaborative environment to achieve seamless operations.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for interacting with medical staff, donor families, and OPOs.
  • Ability to convey complex medical and logistical information clearly and effectively.
  • In-depth understanding of organ recovery, preservation techniques, and medical criteria for organ donation.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of regulatory standards set by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), and hospital protocols.
  • Awareness of ethical considerations and legal requirements related to organ donation.
  • Familiarity with surgical and logistical workflows for transplant cases.
  • Proficiency in using medical software and systems for patient records, scheduling, and regulatory compliance.

We are excited to share the base salary range for this position is $91,130 - $113,915, exclusive of fringe benefits or potential bonuses. This position is also eligible to participate in our annual corporate Success Sharing bonus program, which is based on the company's annual performance. If you are hired at Vituity, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, and/or experience.
