As the Manager of Automation & Controls Engineering, you will lead a team of engineers in the design, development, installation, and continuous improvement of automated control systems within a manufacturing environment. This role combines technical depth with people leadership, focusing on the implementation of advanced automation solutions that enhance safety, quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. You will serve as a strategic partner to operations, maintenance, and IT, ensuring seamless integration and long-term scalability of automation systems.

Work Environment & Availability

  • This is a full-time, on-site role.
  • This role requires 25% travel to manufacturing facilities and on-call support for critical automation issues may be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Team Development
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of Automation & Controls Engineers.
  • Assign resources to projects based on skill sets and priorities.
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Project & Technical Oversight
  • Oversee the design, development, installation, and commissioning of automated systems for production processes.
  • Review and approve control system designs, equipment specifications, and vendor proposals.
  • Manage mid-to-large scale capital projects related to automation and controls.
  • Drive training and coaching to ensure compliance with Safety standards and incident prevention.
  • Perform installations and repairs in a manufacturing environment on all electrical related systems, instrumentation, and controls.
  • Work with the plant, corporate and client personnel to resolve day-to-day production tasks/needs as they arise.
  • Assist Engineering Team with automation and electrical initiatives on Capex projects.
  • Works with an internal maintenance department to perform repair duties outside the scope of electrical.
  • Troubleshoot and repair building and production equipment as assigned in a timely manner.
  • Strategic Planning & Execution
  • Develop and implement automation strategies aligned with business goals and operational needs.
  • Lead long-term roadmap planning for control systems standardization, modernization, and cybersecurity compliance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional leaders to identify automation opportunities.
  • Operational Support
  • Ensure systems reliability by supporting troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and rapid response during automation-related downtime.
  • Oversee system documentation, SOPs, and training for engineering and operations staff.
  • Serve as a technical escalation point during off-hours or high-priority manufacturing issues.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with IT to support system integration (servers, networks, databases, HMIs).
  • Coordinate with production, maintenance, and external contractors for installation and support activities.
  • Collaborate with Quality, Safety, and Supply Chain departments to integrate automation efforts with organizational goals.
  • Performs other duties as required

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering Technology, or other engineering related fields.
  • 7 plus years of experience in automation & controls engineering, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Proven experience in the design and troubleshooting of industrial control systems.
  • Proven experience managing budgets and vendor relationships.
  • Strong knowledge of:
  • o Allen Bradley (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, MicroLogix)
  • o Emerson PLCs (RX3i, 90-30, VersaMax)
  • o HMI platforms (FactoryTalk View SE, RSView32, PanelView, Cimplicity, Wonderware)
  • o Industrial network protocols and architecture (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of SQL databases and process control data management.
  • Demonstrated success managing multiple projects and leading cross-functional teams.
  • Strong understanding of cybersecurity principles in industrial automation.
  • Experience in a regulated or Process Safety Management (PSM) environment is a plus.
  • Continuous Improvement (CI) certification or experience with Lean/Six Sigma is a plus.
  • PMP or equivalent project management certification is a plus.
