HeyTutor has partnered with a school district in Maine and we're looking to hire paraprofessionals/paraeducators who can assist K-12th students during school hours. You will be working with students K-12th.

You'll be actively supervising students as you help them catch up from learning gaps developed over the past school year.

You must be comfortable passing an IN-PERSON background check.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Paraeducators support students across a variety of classroom environments. The environment could be a general education classroom, or a special education classroom (i.e. resource room or specialized classroom). Paraeducators will work with special education teachers to support the needs of students who have IEP.

As research supports inclusion of students with disabilities, with guidance from federal legislation, such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), students will be scheduled into classes based on their individual needs.

Instructional duties that could be assigned to a Paraeducator:

  • Provide assistance with individualized programmed materials
  • Work with teacher to develop classroom schedules
  • Carry out instructional programs designated by the teacher
  • Assist in collecting (observing, recording, collecting and charting) functional behavior assessment data on individual students
  • Take anecdotal notes on student targeted behaviors
  • Assist in preparation or production of instructional materials for special education teacher(s)
  • Make informed decisions with the teacher about content specific accommodations, modifications, and adaptations
  • Presume competence (with keeping expectations high) with as little prompting as possible
  • Assist teacher with behavior management, and teach appropriate behavior
  • Facilitate peer supports, friendships, and positive relationships
  • Supervise students during non-instructional periods, as specified in IEP documents
  • Partner with teachers and other service providers (i.e. Speech & Language Pathologist, School Psychologist, Occupational Therapist, etc).
  • Provide bathroom assistance to students
  • Other duties as assigned by special education teacher

Instructional duties that a Paraeducators may not perform:

  • Sole responsibility for a classroom
  • Sole responsibility for a professional service
  • Responsibility for preparing lesson plans and initiating instruction
  • Responsibility for assigning grades to students
  • Sole responsibility for supervising assemblies or Community-Based Instruction (CBI) trips
  • Substituting for a certificated teacher (unless (s)he possesses the appropriate substitute teacher certificate and is hired by the district as a substitute teacher)
  • Communication with parents/ guardians regarding student progress

SCHEDULE:

Must be available between the hours 7:00am-3:30pm Monday-Friday

7 paraprofessionals needed in total- referrals welcome

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid Maine Department of Education Tech Certification at level 1, 2, or 3.
  • Candidates who do not currently hold the certification must demonstrate the ability to obtain Tech Certification level 1, 2, or 3 within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Prior experience with students (great at working with kids).
  • Comfortable working in a classroom setting and with special needs students.
  • Clear FBI-DOJ background check (provided through us).
  • Must be able to provide a reference from a previous employer.
  • Must be able to successfully complete de-escalation and safety training provided by the school district.

PAY:

$24-$30

Pay depends on a combination of education and experience and will be determined at the time of the interview
