About the job

I'm working with an NYC startup that's just come out of launch and is scaling quickly to meet strong customer demand. They are hiring their first dedicated machine learning engineer to take ownership of core NLP systems and help build a powerful AI platform for data governance and privacy.

This is an applied role. You'll be working with real data, real users, and a fast-moving team that cares about getting things into production. The product is focused on understanding text at scale and surfacing insight across large, messy, and often sensitive datasets. You'll be working on problems like entity recognition, classification, and document analysis using small language models and custom pipelines.

The team is small, thoughtful, and high-context. You'll have a seat at the table when decisions are made and a direct line to the founders.

What you'll do

• Build and maintain NLP models for entity recognition, text classification, and topic categorization
• Design retraining and evaluation pipelines that keep models fresh and trustworthy
• Prototype and fine-tune compact models that balance speed, cost, and accuracy
• Collaborate with engineers to integrate models into production systems
• Contribute to broader architectural discussions across data and ML infrastructure
• Own your work from idea to deployment with support from experienced peers

What they're looking for

• Six or more years of experience in machine learning or data-focused software roles
• Strong NLP fundamentals with a focus on real-world applications
• Experience getting models into production and keeping them there
• Fluency in Python and common NLP tools like spaCy, HuggingFace, or scikit-learn
• Understanding of data pipelines and model lifecycle management
• Located in NYC and available to work in-office Tuesday through Thursday

Nice to have

• Experience with semantic search or retrieval-based systems
• Comfort working with embeddings, vector databases, or text similarity tools
• Past exposure to small or efficient transformer models
• Startup experience where you've owned entire projects or systems
