Since 1893, Helen Keller Services (HKS) has been committed to improving the lives of individuals who are blind, visually impaired or have combined hearing and vision loss. HKS serves the New York City/Long Island area from its new headquarters in dynamic downtown Brooklyn and the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youth and Adults of Sands Point, New York, which has a network of regional offices that extends HKS' reach across the United States.

We currently have an exciting part time career opportunity available to join the HKS team as a Low Vision Specialist at our Brooklyn Location.

SUMMARY:

Responsible for the execution of HKSB's Mission, goals, and objectives to provide outpatient care to clients with eye-related disorders and conditions. This entails direct patient care, evaluations, consultations, diagnosis, and treatment. Must demonstrate a high professional standard at all times.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

+ Provide outpatient care to patients with eye-related disorders and conditions.

+ Conduct routine eye examinations.

+ Determine each patient's visual acuity, field of vision, and hand-eye coordination.

+ Provide treatment including low vision rehabilitation.

+ Take detailed medical histories for all patients, including current and past prescription medication.

+ Evaluate eye-related symptoms, such as discharge, redness, and inflammation.

+ Prescribe corrective lenses when required.

+ Make referrals to board-certified ophthalmologists when required for more holistic eye care.

+ Educate patients on proper eye care.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Required a Doctor of Optometry (O.D) degree.

NYS License/Registered Optometrist to practice

State Certified and Registered to practice Optometry.
