Job Overview
Linux Systems Engineer to join our team supporting activities in Bethesda, MD. Responsibilities include supporting Linux environments on virtual and physical platforms, supporting applications, databases, mail servers, and file servers that support NIH missions.
The role involves providing IT operational and maintenance support, including system/server and network infrastructure planning, design, configuration, testing, monitoring, hardware/software installation, performance tuning, end-user support, technical system integration, and capacity planning.
Primary Responsibilities
Perform routine network maintenance, server installation, configuration, upgrades, optimization, troubleshooting for physical and virtual servers (Unix/Linux) including DHCP, firewall, database, monitoring, and application services. Experience with Mac and Windows is a plus.Provide support for Unix/Linux workstations and assist in network administration, installation, and troubleshooting of scientific applications.Automate server deployments using Ansible, Vagrant, Puppet, Packer, and vSphere.Manage code and documentation using version control systems like Git.Deploy and manage Red Hat Satellite Server for Linux infrastructure management.Assist security team with incident remediation for vulnerabilities.Minimize server downtime by scheduling maintenance during non-production hours.Perform routine backups and configurations of user and server data.Required Qualifications
Ability to pass a background check for Public Trust clearance.5 years of server administration experience.Bachelor's degree or equivalent plus five years' experience as a server administrator.Over 3 years' experience as a UNIX/Linux administrator handling diverse hardware and OS setups.Experience automating server configurations and deployments.Experience monitoring devices with Splunk, Nagios, and custom scripts.Five years' experience with backup and restore in layer 2 and 3 architectures.Preferred Qualifications
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Experience installing, configuring, and managing Windows and Mac servers and workstations.Over 1 year's experience with Spacewalk for Linux server management.Ability to manage projects, tasks, and deadlines effectively.Prior experience in healthcare.Experience working in a multi-OS environment for over a year.Benefits
