Senior Police Supervisors (Lieutenants) serve as administrative guides for their direct reports, serve as backups for supervisory direct reports, and have functional responsibilities such as special events planning, hiring and recruitment, training, or others. Lieutenants may supervise sergeants on a uniform patrol shift and lead a squad in their absence, coordinate administrative functions, and/or serve in an on-call capacity for Command on Call based upon assignment. As senior police supervisors, Lieutenants must be able to manage schedules, evaluate direct reports, prepare, and recommend development plans, and provide coaching, discipline, and commendations as appropriate. Lieutenants must be able to plan operations, make assignments, respond to questions from the public, and intake complaints. Lieutenants are a resource to their direct reports and provide oversight to ensure compliance with policy, law, and local regulations.
