The Iowa Department of Administrative Services is hiring a temporary Library Associate.
The Iowa Department of Administrative Services is a state agency with oversight of the State Historical Society of Iowa whose mission is to preserve and provide access to Iowa's historical resources through programs, exhibitions and projects while advocating for Iowa's past and using it as a connector to the future. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a library or archives within public, cultural or humanities institutions.
Job Description:
The Iowa Department of Administrative Services is looking for a Library Associate, to report to the State Archivist and Library & Archives Bureau Chief. The Library Associate must work from the Iowa History Research Center at the State Historical Building in Des Moines. Typical work shift is 15 hours per week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday during daytime business hours. This position will provide on site and remote reference support to patrons, support Research Center operations and assist collections management work.
Description of work:
•Friendly greeting of all patrons, orientating patrons on library use, providing timely information on library services and availability of collections.
•Assist patrons with the use of physical and on line card catalogs, indexes and finding aids. •
•Retrieves and re-shelves historical library, special collection and state archives materials from storage.
•Assists staff with patron reference requests via correspondence, telephone and email.
•Makes copes and scans for patrons as necessary.
•Guides researchers to other sources of information held inside and outside the State Historical Society of Iowa.
•Conducts stack maintenance as necessary including shelving new or reclassified materials, keeping materials in call number order, book shifts, maintaining a neat appearance and directing volunteers' work.
•Ensure the facility is ready to open and operates smoothly throughout the day.
•Coordinates orders of necessary supplies for equipment and staff.
•Maintains record of library services, volumes in collection and circulation numbers for use in statistical and cost reports.
•Train users on all equipment as needed, monitor and troubleshoot for operations issues and coordinates repairs as necessary.
Essential Functions:
•Maintain a positive, attentive attitude when interacting with co-workers and the public.
•Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills via phone and email.
•Lift, carry and transport collections to patrons.
•Proficiently enter and update information with minimal supervision.
•Proactively organize work, take care of details, and adhere to a routine to keep pace and comply with all requirements, at the agency, state and federal levels.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
High school graduation or G.E.D. and two years of vocational training in technical or para-professional library work;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting two years of full-time experience performing responsible supportive library tasks (similar to Library Aide) for the required vocational training;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting thirty semester hours coursework from an accredited college or university which included a minimum of three semester hours or equivalent in library science for each year of vocational training;
OR
employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to twelve months of full-time work as a Library Aide.
