** Sign On Bonus $5000 **The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has an exciting full time opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician 2 (OT2).The Ophthalmic Technician 2 (OT2) is proficient in the theory, principles, and practice of eye care. This position performs appropriate clinical testing in compliance with department standards and documents in the EMR system.JOB FUNCTIONS:Provides support to providers which includes documentation in patient charts as required and directed for patient care. Provides patient-centric care.Complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control.Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned.Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness.Maintains JCAHPO certifications.Ensures all equipment is calibrated and instrumentation is in proper working order.Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications.Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary.Works evenings and weekends as needed.Performs organizational duties as assigned.Completes IVI (intravitreal injection) prep for patients.Facilitates motility exams & Supports Virtual Care encounters and exams. Performs imaging including but not limited to fundus photos, OCTs, and Slit Lamp exams.Assists with training and onboarding clinical support staff.Acts as a super-user for technology implementations, optimizations, and training initiatives.Acts as preceptor and trainer for team members.Serves as a lead technician providing oversight to clinical teams when assigned.Performs and documents the following items in the electronic medical record.Reason for visitTangent screen visual fieldsChief complaintBasic ocular motilityHistory of present illnessPupillary evaluationBasic review of systemsOcular surface assessmentReview systemic and ocular medicationsEye drop administrationRecord allergiesIntraocular pressure such as Goldman, Tono-Pen, and I-CarePharmacy informationPachymetryFamily, social, medical, and ocular historyInsertion and removal of hard & soft contact lensesVisual acuity at distance and nearColor vision testLensometryStereopsis testManual refractionSensorimotor examConfrontational fieldsAutomated & manual perimetryHumphrey visual fieldsVirtual Reality (VR) visual fieldsAmsler Grid visual fieldsThis list of duties and responsibilities is not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties or responsibilities as necessary.QUALIFICATIONS Education:High School diploma or equivalentRequired Certification and Licensing:Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)Experience:2 years of relevant experienceKnowledge, Skill, and Attitudes:Works well with patients of all age groups.Presents with a professional appearance.Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing.Demonstrates outstanding interpersonal skills.Analyzes, organizes, prioritizes, and meets deadlines in a fast-paced environment.Completes assignments accurately and with attention to detail.Seeks instruction in areas that require additional knowledge.Works independently and in a collaborative environment.Displays intermediate knowledge of ocular anatomy, function, and motility.Exhibits ability to perform the appropriate patient workup using EMR telehealth platform.Demonstrates competency in all ophthalmic subspecialty patient workups.Prepares patients for intravitreal injections.Ability to function as an ophthalmic scribe.Proficient in Microsoft Office.DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONSClinical:Preforms all refractive evaluations including:Documenting patients' medical historyTest patients' visual acuityDepth perceptionColor perceptionConduct a Retinoscopy Refraction, manifest and cycloplegicPerform tonometry and slit lamp assessmentsMeasures intraocular pressure of eyes Measures axial length of eye using ultrasound equipmentPerforms other tests and measurements as requested by physician i.e., PAM, TopographyApplies drops to anesthetize, dilate or medicate eyesEducate patient on refractive proceduresCollaborates on refractive clinical flow with administrative team and providersSurgical:Educate patients on pre- and post-operative instructionsConduct pre and post op vitalsPreform specialized imaging tests for patientsPrep patients for surgery whileOrder and maintain clinical supplies Assist in all laser procedures, elective and medically necessaryActivation and deactivation of all Lasers on J&J and Alcon platformsIdentify proper key cards to be used with different procedures and documents useIdentify and solve any problems by troubleshooting all laser equipmentPerform fluency test and calibration assessment daily to assure surgical parameters and proper laser functionConduct sterilization of laser room, equipment and instrumentsInput all patient data into laser system and ensure properMonitor gas supply and change tanks when necessaryOrder and Maintain OR supplies and medications Document procedures in logbookPreps surgical charts and nomographs for ProvidersCertification and Licensing:Johnson & Johnson or Alcon Certified: Laser, Imagining, Scrub training Laser safety trainingExperience:2 years of relevant experienceKnowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of medical terminologyKnowledge of eye anatomy and physiologyKnowledge of eye disease and systemic diseases that affect the eyeKnowledge of ophthalmic equipment, proper care and usageAbility to communicate effectively, both verbal and writtenKnowledge of computers and excellent typing skillsThe University of Miami offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, tuition remission and more.
