Job Title: Contract Legal Assistant / Paralegal

Location: Knoxville, TN 37902 (Onsite, Downtown | Garage Parking Provided)

Pay Rate: $20/hour (W2)

Employment Type: Contract | Full-Time

Duration: 10/13/2025 – 06/30/2026

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Legal Assistant or Paralegal to support a State Agency in Knoxville. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in a government agency, law firm, or with attorneys handling civil litigation. This role requires professionalism, flexibility, and the ability to manage multiple priorities efficiently in a fast-paced legal environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years' experience as a Legal Assistant or Paralegal (government or civil litigation preferred).
  • Some college coursework; completion of a Paralegal program or Paralegal certificate strongly desired.
  • Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, databases, and electronic document management.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and proactively support attorneys.
  • Must maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and track casework from referral through resolution, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Research, review, and gather information for cases; document findings accurately.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders in a professional manner.
  • Draft legal pleadings and filings using templates and sample documents.
  • File documents with courts and interact with clerk's offices.
  • Coordinate service copies via certified mail or process server.
  • Schedule court reporters for hearings and trials.
  • Assist with preparation of trial exhibits and witness lists.
  • Maintain and organize legal files (hard copy and electronic).
  • Proofread documents and ensure accuracy in all written communications.
  • Prepare spreadsheets for case tracking and status updates.
  • Attend staff meetings and contribute to discussions.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by attorneys.

Work Environment

  • Onsite position (5 days per week) in downtown Knoxville.
  • Garage parking provided.
  • Not a remote/virtual role.
